"We strive to foster a diverse, collaborative and productive work environment in order to achieve superior business results." Found that gem in a job advert for XOM. That's what they're selling to new recruits. Once they're roped in, I wonder how long it takes them to realize that it's more like: We strive to foster a new-ideas-stifling, dog-eat-dog, and managers-take-all-credit-for-your-work environment in order to achieve superior results for the C-suite's wallets.

The problem at Annandale isn’t their preference for PhD’s from Ivy League and certain second-tier universities. The problem is that those universities are taking third rate graduate students from foreign countries, just to fulfil a quota. And Annandale is taking them for the same reason. Just ask Syrup.
Other than some sad souls who want to stay in NJ and happened to get a PhD from a better than average northeast school, no one from a worthwhile background wants to work for EM. We mostly hire average graduates from Midwestern state schools. Our onetime GPA standards (4.0! 3.9! 3.8! ...) are almost down to 3.0 now, hope to avoid the indignity of dropping below C-average. Times change, we are not even good for the Dow, what did we expect.
Do we really want PhDs from “Princeton/MIT/Northwestern” these days? Part of the culture problem at EM is rooted in the smarter than thou mentality…
Love the diversity pic using people from Malaysia too
We're doing OK bringing in contractors 😂
I agree. The job postings are laughable.
Unfortunately, the word is out. People outside of Exxon now know how toxic the culture at Exxon is. Not even young graduates want to join us now. Yes we might hire one or two from a third tier community college somewhere in Louisiana or Mississippi. But the Princeton/MIT/Northwestern PhDs are not coming here anymore. Even the recently hired operators are not of the same caliber as the ones we used to get not so long ago. Exxon is having terrible problems hiring qualified people. Most openings go unfilled until we can find a warm body to put there, usually someone that is not employable by any other company. I think this company is pretty much done. So sad.
