Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

No one wants to be some kind of variable cost

Unfortunately, I had no other option and I desperately needed a job. That’s the only reason I applied here. I knew UP considered employees as a variable cost, but I couldn’t afford to be particularly picky. I guess that's the main reason most people apply here?

I'm in management at a fixed cost, so for me it's about doing as least as possible.

My wife thinks I’m expendable, so it really doesn’t matter to me if UP thinks I’m expendable as well.

I want a pay raise bottom line, or I’ll find a new job. Lots of people in my terminal are finding = paying jobs with better days off.

Bottom line , if you have a employee number you are a variable cost. No your not family, no the company does not care .

All companies consider their employees to be variable cost, not just UP. Their are no companies that consider you family, care about you personally, or look out for your well-being. When you work for someone else, you are an expendable asset. The company will consider you a liability and will let you go whenever they can do the work without you or someone else will do it cheaper. Working for UP, or any other company, is a job and nothing else. Your only obligation to them is perform your job to the best of your ability and you are free to leave whenever something better comes along. All of UP’s employees, both union and management are only numbers to the execs and board of directors. Don’t ever expect anything different, from this or any other company.

Managers are a fixed cost. No matter how much they work them they never get paid overtime.

You want to be a variable cost. That means the more hours you work the more you make.
