Thread regarding Crown Castle International Corp. layoffs

Company conversation

Tone deaf EMT keeps getting worse.

What am I doing with my bonus? I'm paying my rent that went up 40%, inflation that's up 6-12%, and the $5 a gallon gas I need to get to the office now.

They should be ashamed, I hope someone with less to lose has the guts to say something because I obviously don't. But I will crank up my job search.

Military band is the place where you can see people starting at E6 - which is past where your self identified glass ceiling is. Anyone can start in or transition to the band if they have the skills (merit).

https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/is-it-possible-to-get-promoted-this-quickly-in-the-air-force-is-this-typical-for-band-members
https://www.quora.com/How-do-members-of-the-US-military-view-the-US-Marine-Band-given-that-bandmembers-do-not-attend-boot-camp-are-never-deployed-into-combat-and-yet-start-their-careers-at-the-E-6-rank

Then for the enlisted to officer programs - no promotion from enlisted to enlisted will ever come with as many perks as enlisted to officer does. You mentioned starting straight in OCS, which is not "gaining rank" but instead it is starting with rank. You can also avoid bu-t kissing by going through these enlisted to officer programs if you have the line scores in your ASVAB (merit).

Not all MOS's are created equal when it comes to being a Warrant Officer. I was surrounded by WO's and CWO's where I was stationed. They were all hardcore and would tell anyone, regardless of rank, to pound sand. I never got a bu-t kissing vibe from a WO.

Then for your original question of:
"If I’m wrong, explain to me why so many soldiers wash out at E4"
This is simply math. Another way to ask this question might be to say - Why do so many individual contributors leave before becoming a manager? If you are interested in this type of phenomena you can read about Price's Law:

"Price's square root law or Price's law pertains to the relationship between the literature on a subject and the number of authors in the subject area, stating that half of the publications come from the square root of all contributors. Thus, if 100 papers are written by 25 authors, five authors will have contributed 50 papers. Price's law is related to Lotka's law and has been likened to the Matthew Principle. It can be modeled using an approximately L-shaped graph, with number of people on the Y-axis, and productivity or resources on the X-axis." - Wiki

Another way of saying this is that if you have a company of 9 people, 3 do 50% of the work. A simple example of this would be the number of times the radio plays popular names like Bach, Chopin, Mozart, or Beethoven Vs all other composers.

I have been involved in many company conversations where the executives and managers say we have a problem with "Crown Nice," which is another way of saying bu-t kissing managers. If we have a brown lipstick problem, then why are we still promoting brown lipstick? If bu-t kissing is the deciding factor for a promotion in an "all else being equal" type of scenario, then we have a serious problem.

@bae, let’s break down what you just said…..
To attain W1, you need to be selected by a board. It’s just as if not more difficult to get a warrant commission than it is to get E6 or E7. Again, all things being equal, the guy with more citations will get a warrant. And believe me, the guys who kiss a-s somehow end up with the most command officer citations. Let’s not even talk about getting past W3. How many W4,s or W5’s have you ever known? Not many? Why? Because they’re being phased out. Nepotism ruined the warrant officer corps and command staff wants to scratch. But now they’re finding out they don’t need warrant officers anymore so they’re going to let them die by attrition.

“Green to gold” isn’t a meritocracy. Anybody with a bachelors degree can apply and will probably be accepted to OCS. In fact, I didn’t even have to enlist and serve before being accepted into OCS. They took me right out of college.

Military band? WTF? That’s like mentioning the company softball team. Why would you even go there?

@oird+1fFnNBsK Thank you for serving - like I did. However, I remember numerous paths to gain rank without bu-t kissing.
Have you ever heard of a warrant officer? Have you ever heard of ECP/MECEP, green to gold, or other enlisted to officer programs? Have you ever heard of the military band? There are many ways to get rank that do not involve bu-t kissing. Nice try though.

You either never served in the military or you never made it past E4. If you had served, you would know that anything past E5 depends heavily on your leadership scores and even then, you won’t be promoted without board approval. So if you have 2 SGTS up for board approval, whichever of the 2 kisses the a-s of the 2LT or the platoon SGT will most likely get the bump to E6. If I’m wrong, explain to me why so many soldiers wash out at E4. I served for 11 years, I think I know how it works and for you to say favoritism doesn’t happen in the military shows you never served.

@kpbj+1fFnNBsK The military. You get scores based on your time in grade (rank), time in service (overall tenure), and your fitness levels (which could be seen as job duties). The goal should be to have a properly functioning competence hierarchy - a meritocracy. Otherwise you end up with the Peter principle where people get promoted to positions of incompetence.

I challenge anyone to name a good reason to promote bu-t kissing (wearing brown lipstick in the corporate suite as Zappa would say)

What’s wrong with st-----g your boss’ ego for a good raise? You want to make more? You want a promotion, then work for it. Kissing a-s is hard work too. Name a company where you don’t have to kiss a-s to get ahead. I challenge anybody to that.

I got kicked on the teeth with a bs raise. All these people that kiss a-s, get promoted, get good raises and get all the bonusly points. I just wanna do my job and do it well without kissing a-s. Is that too much to ask. Yes, yes it is.

I’ve had several conversations with my boss about my future and advancement within the company during our one on one calls. He told me his secret for moving up and it’s basically telling the senior leaders that their ideas are the best thing you ever heard, wear purple on Wednesdays and be able to swallow your pride in order to stay in the big boss’ good graces. By giving up just a little bit of dignity, you’ll get the title you want and the raises to go with it. It’s not that bad of a trade off and it happens everywhere you go. Play the game and you could be one of those do nothing middle managers that buy jet skis with your bonus.

Crown is paying extremely well for people that just talks without doing the work, and being talkative is highly valued by managers. Those people let others pick up the slack and the ones doing the work are not valued. Good luck if you are not good looking, young, and/or talkative.

Bonusly is also skewed yet being used as employee performance towards collaboration.

It’s quite clear who here is an individual contributor and who is a boot licking suck-up humping the idea of success through the mediocrity of middle management. We get it, Crown pays you a decent wage to beat the drum in the bowels of the ship so you think that somehow you’re one of the clandestine few; but if you pull your penny loafer sans-sock wearing head out of your a** far enough to hear understand what’s going on.

You’d realize that Crown has a terrible problem holding onto the talent that keeps the company from sinking into the ground. Within the last quarter we’ve seen no small number of IC’s and managers leave the company or make plans to. This would not have been happening 4 years ago. Then, everyone was clamoring to get in, now it seems people are checking their watches and reaching for their coats.

This recent company conversation is a direct example of how out of touch the EMT is. “What are you going to do with your bonus?” Then they post up whatever goofy-a** frivolous thing people are buying as if we’re all well off and buying jet skis and summer homes with our bonuses. I know people who’s bonus doesn’t amount to more than an extra paycheck. I know some people who are paid huge chunks of their yearly salary via the bonus system. Forget what they told you about the rubric for bonus pay, some people they just break off 30% of their yearly pay on a “bonus.”

I don’t know what the problem is. Crown is a place where even the slugs get a trophy. Admittedly, I didn’t do anything to deserve all of my blessings but I got a huge bonus and a ton of OT for doing the bare minimum and my boss tells me a did a great job because they can’t say anything else without my throwing the b3s in their faces.

I used to be an over achiever but after I saw what my coworkers get away with, I shut the spigot off and now do the bare minimum and it’s working out fine for me.

To the guy with the 200k in RSUs, when Crown tanks, the RSUs will tank with it. You’ll be left with nothing. I’d start cashing them out. The EMT already does that. You can see it in the SEC filings.

EMT needs a shakeup. Nothing new to see or hear. Talk about lack of value creation. They are just sitting around watching their stock options pile up. There has been a lack of diversity for years, so they make alterations at the board level. Make sure to speak your mind when the "completely anonymous" employee surveys come out. And an unrelated side note. Is this the best and brightest Crown has to offer with the Q&A?
Why can't we buy Crown Stock. Gee wh-z Mongo, setup a ROTH IRA or personal investment account online. It literally takes about 15min or less, including your research time. Plus, they always point back to employees of companies like Enron that had a large portion of their retirement tied to company stock and we all know what happened.
Will we ever do Connected By Good event again? You don't need Crown to hold your hand to volunteer in your local community, so put on your big boy pants and go for it.
Will Crown do a stock split? First off, you are more likely to find that out on an earnings call than the EMT disclosing on an internal company call, but read the tea leaves and look at our competition. Crown is a follower so if SBAC or AMT did it or a large stock holder whined loud enough, perhaps. But SBAC and AMT stock price far exceeds CCI so EMT/Board would probably just take the view that CCI is a better value/growth stock in comparison, no reason to split.

Ge-z, some people are just itching to get on here to bi--h about their job. Nobody is forcing you to stay. The fact is you won’t leave because you can’t find anything better, and even if you did you’d find new reasons to not like that job. You’re never gonna be happy, perhaps you should seek out a new therapist because the one you have is not working.

OP I agree.

How did someone post and reply so quickly? For same reason you did, commenter. They were bothered enough to visit this site as were you.

I'm not going anywhere, I have 200k in RSUs that I'm not going willing to walk away from. I'll go down with the ship.

How did someone both post and reply to this so quickly? I'm starting to think most of these threads are one person just pretending to argue with themselves.

Oh no! Please don’t crank up your job search! You sound like a really good employee that is invaluable to Crown. Whatever would they do without you?
