Apple Just Unveiled M1 Ultra, most powerful Apple silicon

https://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/shopping/m1-ultra-apple-just-unveiled-its-most-powerful-chip-yet/ar-AAUNnOn

We don't have much real world benchmarks and numbers yet apart from the vague charts from Apple, but it seemed to smoked Intel away.

?? This is not an unknown - has been on plan when M1 was introduced. It uses TSMC InFO-L (or InFO-LSI), an EMIB-like version silicon (slice/piece) in fan out. As both recent interviews from PatG and Morris Chang, yield is the key (and corresponding $ burning/volume-experiments). EMIB (in package substrate) yield was really not great when it was first used inside some years ago (and SPR original proposal had "far more" dies using EMIBs in package than today's SPR - not sure where those VPs are today - may still enjoying big pay checks :-) ) In case one still be blind out by the internal propaganda, TSMC basic CoWoS is ~100% yield & InFO is ~99.9% yield (yes, there are more than basic versions of them today). The die recovery loss is not small.

It's great to see people brought 47-die Ponte Vecchio to enlarge the engineers' 3D dream - hopefully, they "can deliver" the real products without keep delaying and keep promoting those credit stealers to be Fellows/VPs using the univ. laboratory prototypes

  • - keep good reasonable yield to save the company with "reasonable cost $ performance product design". Some smart guys "did this trick" successfully during the previous short-live core i5 Foveros once already :-)

Anyway, the world is big and hope Intel can focus on the basics. PatG's new strategy might be OK to save the non-x86-is-much-bigger world - Intel still needs to clean up those culture/promotion/operation (which gradually shifted away since year 2000).

This is simply first generation get their feet wet CPU.

M2 is coming on 3nm soon, Intel is so fu€ked

This isn’t even the top end compute box.
They teased the Mac Pro which is still coming.

This thing only draw 100-150W
They have room to push more compute into a bigger box.

Lol. You're throwing shade at Apple using thermal issues ? The company just stuffed 114B transistors into an SOC which includes the CPU, GPU, and HW accelerators then stuffed that into a silent air cooled box the size of an Intel NUC. You can argue with the benchmarks but the performance will be in the ballpark of Intel's server CPU's combined with a higher end Nvidia GPU. How's the performance of that Intel NUC ?

Hey genius - intel’s next generation and next process are in the future and have historically had major execution slips.
You can buy M1 ultra now.

These hypothetical future Intel products would compete with M2 on an even better TSMC process. Apple rides on TSMC (and drives their R&D budget)

TSMC is curb stomping Intel.
That’s what ‘behind’ means.
Intel cannot catch up to TSMC scale.
Not to mention all of the execution problems that plague Intel’s product development.

M1 Ultra has 7x more transistors than M1.
How long before Apple experiences thermal problems that they couldn't handle with Intel parts?

In five years intel market cap will be > 1T.

Will Intel still be around in a few years ? INTC market cap might be less than what AAPL makes in a year.

Meh.. Alderlake still rocks. Next generation intel cpu on better process will ki-l M1 ultra. Apple will come back to intel in few years.

At some point down the line I can see a mac vs. windows market share flip as Apple drives big differentiation with custom silicon.

Developers have already flipped and consumers are downstream from them a few years later.

Unified memory and all of those accelerators will enable apps that wintel simply cannot deliver. Of course their CPUs totally smoke Intel CPUs but then whole SOC is just something where Intel can’t compete.

All the great engineers have left intel, only the lazy and those with no other options are left.

To really put things into perspective the M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra are all simply scaled up A14 chips from 2020 iphones. They are first gen proof of concept projects. These designs and architecture are ancient and something to keep in mind when comparing against Intel's most recent Alder Lake architecture. Apple is only just beginning to create new designs for high performance, higher power, devices.
