Thread regarding Ford layoffs

How easy/difficult is it to transfer to another team within IT?

How does the process work?

@4ydm+1fE8gaDh - HA, that's the truth about the DBA's! Back in the open office I was close enough to hear their daily discontentment, a few individuals were really ornery. One of the great things about the last two years of remote work is that I haven't had that continual negativity dragging on my personal atttitude.

Ford IT serves only to advance the careers of Ford IT.
Ever wonder why there are so many shadow IT organizations @ Ford that are not classified as IT? It is because the business can’t get what they need from IT so they build it themselves in a shadow IT org they create. One can’t blame them. Ever try do deal with the DBAs? It takes a good nine months to get a new field added to a database, shadow IT can get it done on a shadow database in under an hour.
Ford IT is stuck in stone-age processes and thinking. Sure they slap a new label on their processes every few years to make it appear that they are hip and modern while continuing to do the same ole same ole. Sure we are Agile, we have daily stand up meetings, sprints and a scrum master; yet it still takes 9 months to do a 30 minute change, there are just a lot more people meeting and reporting on fake work and fake progress.

@3lwo+1fE8gaDh Allegedly, IT will service both Model E and Blue as a single entity. Of course, until the next "great" idea of BF and JF.

easy, apply to Jobs in line that's it. IT should not have a problem moving. You belong to Model e, you are one of the chosen ones. They need IT people all over DC division.

To add to what's been said below, don't get excited if and when you get interviews. Those will most likely be fake as well.

The facts of the matter are that you won't know who is blocking you. It could be as simple as a HM who may be interested in you that knows somebody distant in your organization and that person comments on something they know absolutely nothing about. I've witnessed that take place too. Look to see if the position is posted externally as well - I wouldn't even bother with those because that's code for don't want anybody within Ford/over 40.

Distant Person: "Yeah, I hard so and so is great but I also heard they may not be available."
HM: "Ok, thanks and I'll move on."

it also depends on your age. If you're over 40, that's 2 99/100 more strikes against you in a JOL world accurately described in all the other posts. Speaking of which, JOL is the biggest farce known to humankind and is just a front for management pulling these well veiled strings (i.e. "preferred" candidates, F&F, horse trading, director owes other director something, etc, etc) , especially when the jobs are desirable. If you want something undesirable, JOL probably works. If your job is desirable, your odds maybe better of actually getting out of there. Yep, gotta agree the odds are heavily stacked against you.

Adding to @zfv list

  • if you are a thorn in your boss’s side, easy to move

I was a TA. When I approached my manager about moving to another team he was surprisingly supportive. I was shocked.

Turned out he was moving himself. If he hadn't been moving himself I am sure he would have blocked me.

Talked to a friend in another department and they had been blocked for years from moving.

So yes, if you are valued, good luck. If you are an oxygen breather, you'll have no issue.

Seriously folks it doesn’t matter what area you are @ in Ford the same rules apply

  • if you are great at your job, darn near impossible to move.
  • if you are good at your job, difficult to move
  • if you aren’t good at your job, easy to move

The reason is Ford is a collection of warring fiefdoms. All protecting their turf and sabotaging others. Within each fiefdom, there are warring fIefdoms, after all the LL6 need to practice their Ford management skills before being promoted.

You are either a willing participant of the fiefdom building and preservation (management or management wannabe), or you are a pawn in the LL* maneuvers.
I was once told by a very angry LL5 (after I agreed to help another team solve their problem, without his knowledge) “Each time you walk into a meeting look around if you can’t identify who the su---r is, it is you.” At the time I was believing in “One Ford”, that tongue lashing was eye opening.

Exactly. Here we go again with the IT saga- waiting for IT FCG's to enter the conversation.

Your current manager will just quietly block you and not tell you.

Look at the job postings regularly. Apply and be ready for the interviews.

Now? With all the pending reorg? Almost impossible for a regular GSR, much easier if you are in the friends and family plan.

The two main difficulties are:

  • Get accepted for the new position (hard).
  • Get your manager to let you go (almost impossible).

So unless you have personal connections with influence on both managers, you are dead in the water.

Good luck!
