Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Not much career progression

I am quite dissatisfied. I expected much more. That is, I tried my best to move as far forward as possible. However, I haven’t made any significant career progression in the two and a half years I’ve been here.
Maybe I should have been more visible? Maybe I should have had a better plan? Or, maybe it’s just not possible to make a big career progression here anymore? I do not know.
I wonder what your career path is like? Are other people happy with their careers here?

Took me 30 years to make it to band 10. I retired shortly after they gave it to me, knowing full well that I would either have to sell my soul to go to DE or I would be let go in the next round.

Nepotism bruh
Look how many husbands and wives work together in the same locations. Clearly a conflict of interest and BCG violation. That stopping those scumbags from hiring their spouses? He-l to the no

It’s a paycheck and nothing more.

OP, What kind of progression are you talking about? Are you expecting a promotion? After two and a half years? Not sure if that is a reasonable expectation, no matter what company.

I had a manager who gave her favorites (the brown noses) all the training that was allowed in the budget instead of dividing it up. What I did while working on my resume I I
I was reaching out to my contacts. I was able to hookup with san, cloud and tool architects and 2x a week got private lessons to hone up my skills

Don't blame yourself ... it's certainly not you. IBM was a good place to work for a long time, but in the past 5-10 years it's mutated into something horrible and unrecognizable. It sounds like you're an introspective person who's asking some good questions ... but the question you now need to ask yourself is: "Would I be happier somewhere else?" I'm quite certain you'll find the answer to be: "Yes!"

A colleague of mine (who also recently left IBM) likened working at IBM to being in an abusive domestic relationship: "I've invested so much time into this relationship ... maybe if I work even harder, IBM will finally recognize and appreciate me, and (metaphorically) stop beating and abusing me ...." Unfortunately, by staying at IBM, you're just enabling your abuser ... and you need to come to the realization that "enough's enough" and get out before the stressful and toxic environment ruins your health and ki--s you.

Interview and leave. Longer you stay at ibm, more irrelevant you become and ibm wants to keep you at same salary for rest of your life.

I was always wondering how my friends outside of ibm were becoming leads and managers in so less time, it's because they work for growing companies which have those opportunities for them and $$ for those positions.

It's you. Rethink your view of 'progression'.

IBM does not like career progression... we have too many B9s, B10s and DEs on the technical side. You need to look somewhere else.

I am Band 9, been stuck there for a long time. B10 is also death row... sooner or later you will get canned.
