Thread regarding National Oilwell Varco Inc. layoffs

Career growth

I am thinking of leaving because no matter how hard I try, it is simply impossible for me to make any career progress here. I would like to ask how you managed to grow your career here?

Nothing grows in an environment like NOV it has reinvented how not to do business.

Stab colleagues in the back at every opportunity, flirt with management, make fellow team members feel as welcome as a fa-t in a spacesuit . Crawl with your immediate Manager, Go to meeting's of professional groups and keep it secret from colleagues. Cause colleagues to become ill as a consequence of your behaviour resulting in NOV having an excuse to fire them (After a stay in hospital). Works in Montrose so no reason it shouldn't work elsewhere.

I was with Mono in the UK and basically if you’re the right age, I.e. less than 40 and / or the right ethnic background, I.e. similar to your manager but certainly not Caucasian you may have a chance. Otherwise if you only have knowledge, experience or good old common sense then find a company who values all those things because NOV do not!

Career Goal and NOV ? What a joke. No matter how hard you try , its not going to happen. The only way to grow your career in NOV , if you are a friend or a relative of someone in the upper management. If that is the case then no matter how useless you are at what you do, your career will keep growing.

Ex tuboscope. What a mess of a career. I've learned more and gained more professional skills in the year I joined a new company than I had with 21 years at NOV. Nothing has compared to leaving for career growth and learning.

It's whatever you want, progression fir me is making myself better, and that's what NOV have always given me . . .the ability to make myself better. If you're a dead loss they'll not support you, if you're hard working they will support you. There's not always the progression in position (taking your bosses job), but that isn't really progression as I see it

If offshore was still rolling I think we would be in much better shape, but here we are at $72 oil and offshore is barely moving. There is just so little differentiation and high competition onshore. And over the past few years everyone has raced to low cost countries. It’s going to be an indefinite profit squeeze from here on out unless some disruptive innovation within NOV comes along.

I’ve been with Tuboscope for 19 years and I feel its aged me 50 years, especially the last few years. This team of management is the worse I’ve experienced yet. Sure not the same feel here it was years ago.

I was just looking for work when i stumbled onto Tuboscope in 1992. Now, 29 years later i am starting to think about retirement from here when i turn 50, maybe i will move into a different field of work, either way, i have really enjoyed my years here :-)

I was in the same position as you. I left and never looked back.

What area/function are you in? (Ops, sales, IS , finance, etc)? Many folks are willing to have a career conversation. Have you spoken with a leader in your area? (Yeah I can’t wait for the avalanche of downvotes and negative comments).
