Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Is it possible to negotiate?

If I have an offer from another company that comes with better pay, can I approach my manager and ask for a match? I'm still not sure if I'm going to take it. I don't particularly like HON, but I'd have to move for the new position and with three kids in school, that's not something I'm looking forward to. I'm worried if I ask and they say no but I decide to stay, I'll be putting a target on my back. Has anybody been in a similar situation?

The best thing to do is take the offer and leave Honeywell. No matter the outcome of trying to get Honeywell to match the offer you have, you'll have a big bullseye on your back for the next round of RIF's.

Negotiation at Honeywell -

You: "I've been offered more money and better working conditions at another company. Can you at least offer me something to stay?"

Them: "Nope. Next!"

Honeywell does not play the match game. They would rather lose good employees than pay more to retain them.

As another former employee (5-block for 20 years), don’t bother asking for a match. All you’re doing is wasting everyone’s time.

I have brought up the fact that my letter was received to my manager. They did not exactly show enthusiasm for being able to meet the amount or get me what I wanted. I then brought it up to my manager's manager. They were able to understand I didn't want to leave if they matched/met what I wanted. Yes, I got what I wanted, negotiated, and won.

I don't trust mgmt at Honeywell. You would be one of the 1st to be layed off because you are looking for a job outside. Even with that aside, you wouldn't see a raise in the next few years. Run with that offer and good luck in your new adventure!

Between the Baccalaureate me Mandate and folks leaving due to return to office commands, let’s face it, we are in the middle of a Soft Lay-off.

Doesn’t hurt reputation, costs nothing, They will just let you walk. It’s all moving to India in some areas, they are great people, not an issue, but very hard to ignore the facts. If you feel like overhead, embrace that feeling, because your right, you are and it’s not your fault.

Save your dignity, COVID changed everything, leave if you like the offer.

No one will blame you.

It is certainly possible. Not all things possible are wise.

Yes

We give you whatever we want. Then you go on strike. Then we lock you out. Move all operations out of Minnesota. So we can move them into low cost regions, you accept whatever we give you.

We still move you to a low-cost region. Except we do it no slower process. Instead of being locked out, and moving it out in a hurry. We give you one to two years before we do it.

I've been around the block a few times and everywhere I've worked, when someone tried that approach they were branded as untrustworthy or conniving, and were out in the next "right sizing".

Run, do not walk, away from Honeywell as fast as you can. If you present to your boss for a counter-offer, you might get one. If you stay, you'll be tasked with training your replacement. Then you'll be on the RIF train for the next round of layoffs: PIP, outer nine block and no bueno.

Why anyone needs a counter-offer from HW? I would run away from HW in a heartbeat, save your positive energy to a your new adventure away from HW

Ask for 5% more.

As previously mentioned, unless you are upper elbow, they won’t be interested.

Don't approach your boss unless you're willing to accept the other offer and move.

Had a previous manager I really liked a bit upset I never gave the chance to keep me. But... if you're already interviewed and given an offer...you are pretty well out the door already. If you leave, say you got a great offer sort of out of the blue...love what you currently do but have to see about this new opportunity. This way, no burned bridges. If you stay and want to negotiate... then just tell your boss, you had a recruiter reach out with a great offer based on a recommendation. Ask them if you should explore it, or stay here. I wouldn't put an ultimatum.

@dwu Yes, as @ult said, I'm still not sure I'm taking the other job. If I did, then I'd have already asked. As it is, I still have plenty to lose.

Former Director here. If you are in the upper L, they will likely try to keep you. If not, I wouldn’t expect it.

However if there are layoffs being planned currently, then it doesn’t matter where you are ranked. They will just let you go.

I have been through this many times.

My experience has been that the do not negotiate. I left the company and returned a few years later to the same job but much higher pay. I left the company again this year but would return if I were to get an offer that's 10% above my current pay.

@dwu+1epL6WZF, their concern is that they might then be near the top of the list for layoffs if they ask for a match, don't get it and then decides to stay due to keeping continuity of the same school for their kids.

I doubt Honeywell will match an offer ("next drone up!"), So the OP will need to weigh the pros and cons with you family. If none of you kids is older than about 10, I would say go for it. Older than 10 makes it a little tricky in my opinion.

What do you have to lose? If they want you, they'll try to keep you. If they say no, you take the new job.

Keep us posted.
