Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Government money and big spends will end in Layoffs

Intel’s failure isn’t a result of lack of money or cost structure issues. They have had the margins which are the envy of the industry. Need another billion or so was never a problem. The issues are deep and wide. It started with decades of flawed strategy and equal long history of failed promotions of people with the wrong skills and thinking has created a huge tree with rotten core and roots. Changing the top dog was a potential turnaround, but alas not to be. IDM2.0 and Foundry 3.0 will the the three strikes that ki-l intel.

It isn’t about government money or cost that is why intel failed, far deeper and not being addressed at all

“ While Intel spent $50 billion on capital expenditures and $53 billion on R&D during the past five years, it also lavished shareholders with $35 billion in stock buybacks and $22 billion in cash dividends, which altogether used up 100 percent of Intel’s net income. Intel’s distributions to shareholders have been far greater than those made by either Samsung or TSMC, according to Lazonick”

“Like Intel, IBM also decades ago focused on maximizing shareholder value.”

“IBM could have invested those funds in state-of-the-art chip facilities, but, in 2015 sold its semiconductor fabs to GlobalFoundries. “

“The investments necessary to build a national chip industry are far larger than $52 billion and probably far more than any one government can afford”

“the U.S. about to make a multi-billion mistake in much the same way that the Chinese government has by funding a national fab capacity buildup that has largely been a flop”

I strongly would ask the USA government to spin off their fab and let everyone make chip there. If the government can ask them too they will. Just let Intel's design group fail but we still have other companies.

@mhs+1efZF98p intel is dinosaur coz it not only do inhouse design but also manufacturing. No one is protecting golden garden. Everyone is free to work on what they passionate about.

Simply coz an outside semiconductor process is readily available does not mean we become economically enslaved of that technology.

I am against government handouts. Look at Tesla. Last year generated its first profitability selling their government credits to other auto companies, what a sham. And that caused its stock to increase (it qualified for the s and p 500 inclusion) Dosgusting.

Other auto companies and government helped tesla. I know it is a darling of Silicon Valley people. It is a New status symbol replacing bmws.

But There are more shameful examples. government bailed out financial firms, after their excessive risk taking tanked the US economy, left many jobless, caused regular folks to suffer financially. But regardless, government chose to bail them out. Intel’s case is actually more worthy compared to the billions went into the corrupt Wall Street firms and as bonuses to Wall Street bankers. Billions of tax payers money wasted in solar businesses, tesla etc.

Wastefulness. What is the point of working hard, paying taxes. It is ill used. On top of it trillions of $$ were printed as covid stimulus - which inflated stocks and real estate markets, Increased inflation. So again, it is against the working tax payers. We are trying to get some point % increases. Our pay has declined in real terms. Both political parties are at fault. They are nothing but fundraising orgs, non profits to fund elections…

USA should focus on what it is good at and where talent is.

AMd, Nvidia, Qualcomm, Apple, Google and even Amazon now do some really innovated design. Leave the manufacturing to those who are good at it and have scale and ecosystem to enable this continued innovation.

Intel is a dinosaur trying to protect its golden garden and nothing more. They are using the narrative of national security and supply line insecurity to get big handouts at the expense of the taxpayer.

So what should be done to have domestic chip design and manufacturing?
