Thread regarding Norfolk Southern Corp. layoffs

Mandatory overtime…..

How is it legal for this company to force people to work 8 hours past their normal 8 hour work day? And if they refuse they are threatened to be fired? Not what I signed up for 15 years ago and was never a thing until recently.

Wait until someone gets ki---d after working a week straight of 16 hour days. They'd be liable 100%

In America they can do that. Says a union official who is struggling for membership. Instead of saying they can do that should be pushing for more jobs duh!!

Mandatory overtime has been around for years. It also exists in other realms of industry. If your job is that bad, that pathetic, please look for other employment before you have a nervous breakdown. It’s hard to beat the money and benefits. It’s the best job you’ll hate. Seriously, if it’s that bad, rearrange your lifestyle and resign.

As long as its not stated in the contract as otherwise then it is absolutly beyond a doubt legal

"Make a rotating schedule and rotate. That way everyone gets OT but also get days off. That way no one gets burned out."

We have a overtime book. If everyone turns it down, then what? The carrier has zero control of a "rotating schedule" The union can mandate a "rotating overtime schedule" I have no idea where the he-l you were at, but if your location let that happen y'all were fools.

The fact is the company is telling whoever they want to hand select to stay late or work until the job is done. It has been happening for awhile now. In certain scenarios depending on your craft they can enforce the youngest man.

Now, all that being said this was originally only designed to happen in "emergency situations" ie snow storm, flooding, etc...The carrier has taken advantage of this without any union doing sh-t about it. They lay off 2/3 of a shop and then enforce overtime. It's a sh-t show and the unions let it happen. This company isnt ranked #2 worst employer in the country for no reason.

Not forced to work there. Im sure some furloughed employee will take your spot. Remember the railroad will be just fine without you.

Forced Overtime Yes I get it.....sometimes neccesary. But a whole 8 hour shift of forced spontanious O.T. when you are not prepared is B.S. in my opinion. You shouldnt be threatened with discipline. Some people have other responsabilitys.

Honestly, I'll take the occasional forced overtime, than the days where it was damn near impossible to get any overtime.

How is anything legal (or illegal)?

Easy...just get politicians involved.

Yeah. Like our last one we voted down. They put the same contract back up for another vote, no changes, and it passed. 🤔 contracts aren’t worth the paper they are on.

I don't know why you think that if they put something in the contract, that it will make a difference. The Unions don't hold them to the agreements that are still valid. Go ahead and vote no on the next contract and watch what happens. Everyone will say they voted no, but somehow, it always gets ratified.

This used to go against the contract but somehow our union leaders negotiated it out. I have been trying to get a answer for some time as to why they would have given this up but only get the runaround. Please let your union leaders on national level know that you are demanding that they put it back into the new contract or we will not sign!!!!

Try working in a "real" non-union job. Overtime IS a requirement. Some employers even have discipline forms for refusal to work OT.
