Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Farley first at Sebring race

So we have a chip shortage, recalls on platforms new and old, losing money on mobility, and our leader goes racing?

Does this help Ford or is Nero fiddling while Rome burns?

When Ford CEO Jim Farley took over the top position at the automaker back in October of 2020, he did so with the intentions of continuing his hobby of racing on the weekends. FoMoCo was happy to oblige, and Farley has since participated in and scored impressive finishes in a number of races, including the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca, the Road Atlanta Grand Prix, and the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association’s Sebring Speed Tour. Now, Jim Farley has yet another trophy to add to his growing case after securing first place at the Classic 12 Hours of Sebring.

@3phv+1ebtxPbZ "Please, let the world know what hobbies you deem acceptable for a CEO to have"

Oh, any hobby is acceptable. It is just in my personal experience, whenever there is a workload increase due to big projects or "emergencies" at work, after I put all the needed overtime, I don't have time left for my hobbies. It is the same among my coworkers and friends. So how is it possible that being at the helm of a company with so many issues (quality, microchip shortage, reinventing itself as a tech company, transitioning from ICE to EV) the CEO has increased his time for his hobbies?

If Ford is really trying to catch up with Tesla, maybe JF should take a page from Elon Musk' book:

  • Musk works regularly for 80-100 hours a week with a special focus on design and engineering work.
  • During Elon's free time, he would read tons of books ranging from fantasy and sci-fi novels to biographies and structural engineering.

The most successful people don't just dream big, they talk the talk and walk the walk, to the point of putting everything on the line to make those dreams their reality. It seems the dreams of JF is to be a professional racing driver, not a successful CEO.

Alan strikes me as more of a golf guy. A company this size will always have a crisis of some kind, it doesn’t mean the top employees shouldn’t have any enjoyment outside of work. Also this isn’t a “teetering on bankruptcy” crisis like Alan had to deal with. And by laying off, you’re referring to the mandate I assume?

Do you think Mullaly would be off car racing while the company was in crisis?? This is about more than a weekend hobby. This is about optics. Company is talking about laying people off and Jimbo is out going fast around a racetrack with a grin on his face.

Since when did having a weekend hobby become a criminal act for an executive? Would you prefer a CEO who goes camping? Skiing? Vegas Gambling? Please, let the world know what hobbies you deem acceptable for a CEO to have. Or do they deserve to never have a day off? Genuine question

I truly believe Farley is a car guy, too bad we are a truck company.

Well, if he have a CEO more interested in racing than in solving the many problems at the company, maybe we should let a professional racing driver to steer the company during the weekends.

Too bad those results do not filter on our quality / launches / and new products. We left the car segment to our competitors. So, no he is not a winner yet.
