In fact, the most important thing is to work smart, not hard, that is, do the best you can without straining yourself too much, or just enough so the manager gets the impression that you are putting in a real effort. It’s ugly, but I notice that all the most valued employees here are just good actors.

Merit raises never happened over a decade but still bases your pay like they exist with promotions.
The older I get, the more a job is just a job. Nothing "career" related is worth stressing in your off time. Going above and beyond will make you old before your time, and your family and friends will see you as a stranger. That's heart breaking.
Especially now, when you could nearly ki-l yourself "meeting objectives" and "KPIs," it doesn't even mean you're getting a raise or bonus. So why bother? Take care of yourself, because no one else will. A job is a job, end of story.
