Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Hopefully not on the RA list

I'm starting to get annoyed a bit every time someone says they want to be on the RA list. Everyone just keeps saying that over and over. Really? You really want to be a RA'd? Not me. I'd rather go on my own when I feel like it.

I did both :) Since my IBM job was easy (2-3hrs a day to do what was needed) and managers did not know what I was doing anyway, I was able to start side job will still at IBM. Since I was already getting 0$ raise every year, no need to worry about performance.

So I got two paychecks until I finally go on RA, where I got 3 months to focus on new job and still get 2 paychecks, then severance and vacation payout were helpfull.

Year I got RA was on of my best earning wise.

Job market is so hot you can be well into your 60's with outdated skills and still land a job within a couple of days making really good money + sign on $ bonuses everywhere.
Getting RA'd would be a blessing in disguise if you really hate your current job.

Interesting. So why would some folk want to be RA'd? I've come up with some ideas.

  1. An employee in their 50's and has nowhere else to go, if you know what I mean. Getting RA'd shifts 'blame' to IBM and garners sympathy from friends and family. Ouch! Keep reading :)
  1. An employee in their 20's who has nothing to lose. But then they realize an RA strike on their resume isn't a good look for the few bucks in the back pocket.
  1. An employee in their late '40s or early 50's with a lot of talent and years to go. Aiming for a golden goodbye if timed correctly with a new placement lined up elsewhere.

I was RA'd from IBM in my 50's. I saw the age thing on the wall and got prepared. This site actually helped my mental health during that process. I neither sought nor fought RA... at my age I knew it was inevitable at some point. I know many others are not so fortunate, so I'm not gloating at all. Far from it. Good luck all.

I hear you. It's not like IBM's offering some great severance package that's worth waiting around for. I finally got disgusted with the toxic work environment at IBM and just quit -- best decision I've ever made! 😊
