That is, I am undecided whether it is worth going to a company where the atmosphere is certainly better (I know because a few friends work there), but neither is the pay significantly higher nor are the benefits significantly better?
I believe that there are people who would agree to a slightly lower pay, just so that they are no longer under such stress?

Oh ge-z--what's the question here? Staying in the present misery versus moving to a better place that maybe isn't crossing your palms with 'significant' silver? Call it a 'lateral' and take the offer unless there's a red flag waving somewhere!
I don't believe you'll be sorry. I do speak from personal experience.

I have taken lesser pay to get out of a job that I was no longer happy at. But eventually moved up to a better paying position in that new company and was much better off emotionally and mentally. Good luck 🙏
