Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Ageism in the automotive world

It is already clear to everyone that ageism is a big problem here. I plan to leave next year because I know that if I do not do that they will get rid of me very soon. While I’m still marketable, I want to leave. However, I was thinking of changing the industry because I think Ford isn’t the only one in the automotive world where ageism is present to such an extent?

This only occurs in the OEM's. Attempting to remake their image into a silicon type corporation. It's superficial.

Tier one and two, not only try to hire experience, they also pay significantly better depending upon skillset. At the end of the day, OEM's are a one trick pony betting the farm. Tier one and two serve many masters, and are much more important. Right now, the AV and EV tier ones are eating everyone's lunch. They aren't limited to one OEM. They service ALL. Their chances of going under are about nil.

Those are the people you need to be working for, as their paying out the nose for expertise and talent.

The youthful develop skillsets within the OEMs, but mature and grow, and spread their wings within the tier suppliers. The less desirables retire through the OEM's.

Did you not know this?

The vehicles being designed and built represent the culture of the company. Low piece-cost parts with questionable long-term durability and reliability. The vision is short term in all regards.

All companies do not value older employees. That’s why anti discrimination laws are supposed to protect those over 40. The laws don’t always work. Once you are older, you cost too much and don’t work as hard as say a college graduate due to your family responsibilities.

I have many tool boxes. They have new and old tools in them. Some jobs require a specialized new tool, but the tool onlys work for that job. Many tools in my toolbox are old, scarred, scratched, and greasy but they have solved many problems and I cannot do without them and I would not part with them for anything.

If you want to know what the company thinks of older employees look no further than the Ford Portal when you log on. Lot's of spring chickens in those shots of employees all smiles holding there coffee mugs and Iphones with backpacks in tow on the portal.

Was not always like this. Back in the 2000's Ford pretty much rid themselves of the low performers. If you wander what happened? Look no further than these items.

  1. PR Rating system. Despite performing above and beyond you Objectives we were told
that the company wants to move everyone to the middle of the pay grade.
  2. Trust. Look at the recent way the retirees were told they have to go on the
exchange. I know a quite a few people tell me had they known up front they would
    not except
the VSSP. This is a prime example of senior management lacking courage.
  3. SRD targeting older workers. Sorry but the Boston & Keirsten emails paint a picture
of how a corporation really thinks of its employees.
  4. The constant reductions in Headcount. They seem to never end. Come right out tell
the troops upfront what is going on vs jerking them around.

So, if this company kept squeezing the life out of its workers how would you feel? I do my job but I will not go the extra mile. Even if it is a big money savor or a patent. I will do that after I retire. No longer a career but a job. like landscaping. So, before somebody say why don't you quit or retire, in 2022 if they do offer, I will go. Went through a divorce with a few kids. SO yes, that pension was the only reason.
I wish those after me the best of luck I hope they make it to the 30yr mark. There are some wonderful people here. Just not in the senior leadership positions.

It's the old adage re-tooled.
Ford vehicles don't appreciate in value over time.

I dont get it.... some on this board complain about ageism while also complaining about all the useless 30+ year people just biding their time. Which is it? does the company hate older workers or does it let all these older people hang around and take up space?

Among other things, Bill is an age-o-phobe too.
