Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Training ground for wannabe managers not leaders

I had 8 managers/supervisors in last 7 years. Only 1 of the 8 was any good because he was close to retirement and earned his position/ the respect. The others were green around the gills, there to check the boxes and to crack the whip. Most have little technical, commercial, or people skills. Even tried to meddle in areas where they should not to create bad outcomes.

Revolving door of wannabe managers and very few do-ers. Create a low trust environment.

If the company want to do better, then they need to put experience people in positions where they can influence outcomes.

Agree, age is not a determinant. However experience does matter because you see things differently when you’ve encounter the situation before. Good explanation of leadership…. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HYXH2XUfhfo

I don't think age matters.... I've had older managers who were probably exHiPos who had already reached a substantial amount on their salary curve and were lookin to coast in their last 10 years in their career. they were quite the worst managers - not wanting to rock anything and imposing their conservative mindset on 20-somethings who wanted to make a difference.

I also had bosses much younger than me who were progressive, supportive and extremely respectful towards the experienced folks in the team. then there were the crazy ambitious ones. it's really a mixed bag and there's no value in generalizing. overall I'd still say the bosses I met in EM were good workers and intelligent, compared to my previous jobs

I’ve had 8 direct managers in the past 5 years and all but 1 were great. Right place right time I guess.

OP, you are spot on with this comment. This is an old part of the Exxon culture and wastes much time and resources, but,is supposed to cull the best leaders at the expense of the technical staff development and morale. The attitude is if any young supervisor can't cut it, they can simply be thrown back into a lowly technical role. The attitude still exists and has to go. Need real managers at all levels
