Return to work in Janurary - questions

I know there is talk of returning to the office in Jan. For IT, since I know it may vary, I thought the choice was at the discretion of your LL6 or LL5 to set the policy for what works best with your team.

So in my mind even though the return to the office is Jan, managers may allow only a once or twice a month visit and team huddle and the rest of the time will remain WFH, is this right?

I recall during two townhalls (Philippe/Kumar)last year that we were told that we

  1. Could move out of SE Michigan with permission of team leader
  2. You would not be forced to come in.

This BS that we need to sit in a room to be creative! That is CR-P. Since WEBX you rarely see an in person meeting. I understand when you have builds or launch. otherwise this smells like some manager trying to justify their job.
In any corporation people their will be those who abuse the system that happens before and during COVID.
As long as an individual does their job I don't care if they are in NOME ALASKA.

This process of outsourcing CAD began in 1995 or 96. I was at AMTD in Redford and remember when they began a program to keep drawings in process 24/7. The designer in the US would check in the drawing at the end of the day and it would be checked out and continued to be worked on at some global Ford Location. Ford India was tasks with model development back then. They had an abundance of PHD's who worked very cheap.
Bottom line. If you are in software, that work can always go to the lowest bidder worldwide.

"85% chance your IT job is going to India,"

What amazes me about this is that there seems to be no cognition of the impact that this policy has on our economy on a wider basis. Ol' Henry despite his many short-falls was still a pretty smart guy in general and so the huge benefit of paying his employees a very good wage. He could demand high-quality, efficient workers since there was always a line of people wanting to work for the better wages. And those higher wages stimulated the economy more widely and promoted growth of Industry, and that's a tide that does lift all ships. Two-Jims & Billy seem to see no farther than financials that benefit them (and family) economically and egotistically, completely missing the bigger picture of the actual good they could be providing. Prof. Moonbeam was just as clueless, might as well as had Grandpa Abe Simpson telling the stories instead since those are at least funny rather than just "baffling with BS"

@2apg- gotta agree with ya, this sure feels like 18-19 years ago when the management in place then tried to push the same thing before finding it was false economy of savings when each job shipped over to SE Asia required at least 2-3 people for each head over here replaced, and the same amount of work still didn't get done and the quality of what was done was so bad that it usually needed reworking.

I suspect that much of the new management that is taking us down this path were still pretty early career then, or possibly even still in school so haven't seen the folly for themselves.

Have you been listening to what Farley says? 85% chance your IT job is going to India, so the return to office is a moot point.
Have you been paying attention to what LL6 have been saying about how they are being directed to create jobs online postings for the purpose of saying, we posted positions but were unable to find qualified applicants?
Have you been paying attention to what LL6 have been saying about directives to relocate jobs to Ford of India?
Have you been paying attention to what LL6 have been saying about directives to encourage certain demographics to resign/retire?

Welcome to the Ford Hunger Games, may the odds be ever in your favor.

That makes an interesting point actually. I figured that we would see some change in policy come January even if the COVID numbers are not great, because so many companies have already brought people back regardless of what the numbers look like.

But, if Ford pushes back any kind of return once again, maybe it's because their plan for "coming back" really is not much of a change from the way things are, so just as well to push it back again? I dunno, just thinking out loud, pure speculation.

The way things have gone so far, I'm not sure I'd be planning on being able to go back into the office even for 'purpose driven' work come Jan or Feb.

@hpk+1dqSjDoX, where did you get all this insight from? Are you in HR?

The key words that people not constrained by need, will be in the office for "purpose driven work" where in office, face to face contact is specifically required. There's not going to be a 'just because you want to hang out' situation. Reason is that only a few locations will be open and available on a walkup or schedule basis. Even then, workspace capacity will be limited as they are not outfitting for max potential capacity. There are no guarantees what building you can find space to work on daily basis unless it is for a special circumstance. Desk prescheduling may be available for some desks whereby at a certain time the night before reservations will open on a first come basis. Expect those to go quick. So anyone not in a special situation thinking they are going go into the same building every day and sit in the same place is mistaken.

I don't have any more concrete info than you, but what you said is largely the feeling I got too, that it will be mainly up to your direct management as to what works best. I am also really anxious to see how this actually works out in practice, because I think there's this big expectation that we're going back in January, but also it's been said that things won't be the same as they were pre-pandemic. So, it's still not really clear what happens come January.
