Department Heads

Who can explain the reasons the department head role exists? Does anyone know of a useful department head?

Excellent summary and spot on. Both dh in our org are useless as is at least half of the sls

SLS here in BR, have heard my DH say there is almost no reason for them to exist. Said XOM has a jobs program, gotta prepare those folks for the next level of management.

After changes to PADP process it’s funny watching them scramble to stay relevant and see what work you do they can take credit for. Also they are so disconnected from the reality within the organization. Don’t understand why folks want to quit.

Department Heads are just individuals that prepare PowerPoint slides for Directors who prepare PowerPoint slides for Vice Presidents. If you are a smart Department Head, you will sign up for a PowerPoint template annual subscription to an on-line service.

PowerPoint without meaningful data to support the content of the slide is preferred for upper level management reviews. Meaningful data only confuses the conclusions.

@1vdx+1diFz0Xl Unfortunately it is similar to all the other sites, no one wants to challenge status quo because you get Pipped or dropped.

You should see the dead wood we have in Clinton! Upper management keeps rotating the same meatballs between jobs, most don’t want to leave NJ so they keep playing the shell game with these same folks, as most are failing up. We are in serious need of new blood with cold eyes, from another location with a set , all management currently in place here are scared to death to challenge the status quo. From Darrin T down all the same. NJRSC what a waste..,,,,KoolAid in the atrium!

Not sure why we have dh positions. Our sls steals their work when new ones arrive so she can elevate herself above others sls. She also pulls their work with their permission then threatens admins with their job, makes them so the work and then claims their work when she brings it back to them. Turn the ship around he-l. They have run the ship aground. God he-l the gulf coast.

I would almost guarantee that the gulf has the most clueless dh in the circuit. We just received a new division manager. Hopefully he cleans house but most of the times the clowns take care of the clowns. Definitely zero use for these folks and probably half of the sls.

This job title is good for self-esteem.
They need it, you know. Very much.

@tys: in the last few days I had an epiphany about XOM: it's all stick and no carrot. no one sticks their neck out for carrot for they fear the stick so much. don't make things better, just don't f*ck anything up. how long has it been since we've had a revolutionary invention? we won't until the culture changes.

Department Heads are like an extension of BS Supervisory jobs where they don’t have much scope or many direct reports. The company’s promotion system is so f-ed up that the organization creates layers and layers of management just to have a “talent pool” that is way overstocked relative to the actual number of senior positions that actually exist. It only serves the purpose of being a “box to check”.

The reason for their existence is because they couldn’t make it to a product manager role
