Decline of all standards?

When I started working here, people who weren't hard workers couldn't thrive here. Now everything seems possible even for those who seriously lack communication skills?
I received an email from such a person and was shocked by the lack of professionalism in communication. I couldn’t believe I got such an email.

The advent of word processing was the first blow to thoughtful writing. In the days when ink hit paper almost irreversibly, one had to think carefully about what they wanted to say and how to go about it before committing to script.

Email made it worse, and instant messaging even more so. Punctuation has gone by the wayside, as has subject - verb alignment and other Strunk & White cornerstones.

I used to get imperatives from managers that were inscrutable on the surface, and made sense only in context. In a busy day with lots of different priorities, it is easy to mistake that context and spend time delivering the wrong thing.

It is not just TR, it is everywhere. As a manager, I take the time to coach my team in this lost art of communication. In the Information Age, clear communication skills is the single best attribute any worker can have.

A lot of it comes down to training which there has been a dearth of. We used to have great training and their immediate managers actually trained their direct reports.

That is not happening at the same pace or at the same level of quality. However I can’t always blame the managers as they too are set up to fail. They have more responsibility and work like the rest of the employees here.
