Thread regarding Belk layoffs

STM fired for telling associate they can’t go home sick

an stm was fired for telling an associate
They could not go home sick and to “stick it out”, the associate reported the stm and two days later she got canned. apparently if an associate asks to leave, all you can say is “ok” you can’t tell them “stick it out”, the associate ended up having pneumonia. We were told to say the stm left for “health reasons”

I think the stm told the associate she would be abandoning her job if she left sick which is not true, that’s why she was let go.

I've never asked an employer (including belk which was a former) if I may leave when sick. I inform them that I am leaving and why. I also don't ask to go "potty"-- managers, clients, customers, whoever. When it's time, I go. It is not military nor prison where that amount of control is exerted. Anyone thinks they will prevent me from doing those things is sadly mistaken.

Wow I have absolutely been told I have to stay because it was too busy while I was so sick I had completely lost my voice and I was scaring customers who thought I had covid. Should have called to report it. Didn’t think of it at the time.

You can’t ask any personal questions of the associate wants to go let them leave. It’s not worth the possible EXCEL complaint. When it comes to HIPPA or COVID they will side with the associate every time.

You won’t have a job. Because of possible covid you must let the associate leave if they ask no questions asked. all you can say is “ok”. that’s what the HRBP told us

But you can tell them to “suck it up” or “deal with it”. “Not my problem” is effective also.
