Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

What roles do people leave for? (EMIT)

I know a lot of people in EMIT have been quitting for much higher salaries. But what positions are they applying for at other companies? I‘ve only been here two years so I know we’ve had attrition I just don’t know where they’ve gone (heard a lot of Microsoft and Amazon generally, but not sure what roles?). I can’t see how my skills translate to many other companies without having to start again from scratch (except maybe a solution architect if I do some cloud trainings), in which case I’ll make the same salary as here.

Currently working at another O&G company and i see some EMIT posting and was wondering if a bump in pay is really worth all the issues everyone is posting.

Grass is always greener is a saying because it's mostly true. Not always. I'm sure those motivated people who'd excel no matter where they went likely are doing better after they left. But I'm guessing for other they are realizing it's not Utopia where they went to. If you think XOM is the only f-ed up company you are in for a big letdown. But at least you got a picture under the cube.

Well, remember grass doesn't grow on an oil-spilled Titanic (or Valdez).

Went to a large manufacturing company managing a team of engineers that implement technology at customer sites. Within a year, promoted to director. Would have taken decades within EM. Grass can be quite greener outside of the titanic!

I have heard of a lot of the people that quit going to Amazon.

Seems that some of the first wave of PIP’s and layoffs went to Amazon and those people are proposing/recruiting current EM employees.

From the little I’ve heard though the google people were specifically AI/ML? I mean I have infra skills with some scripting, although not quite software dev, and it seems like mostly the people leaving are developers. So I’d either have to really grind for many months on Dijkstra’s algo etc, essentially start from scratch or find somewhere that’s paying top for infra. Or potentially learn cloud and become a solution architect or cloud architect. Which it seems like Amazon and Microsoft then make the most sense as GCP seems mostly AI/ML/DL specific.

Like my skills are marketable, but only for a small pay bump. Not the 70% increases you’re seeing for devs with only a few years experience. And I know you shouldn’t just chase money, I mean I genuinely enjoy this area of work. But if I’m going to quit, I want it to financially make sense. Otherwise I can be the only person left here and keep getting promoted lol.

I left recently after being there for 7 years. I had a niche technical assignment (not dev) and a project manager assignment. I had way more recruiters reaching out for the technical assignment but our technical practices were so dated I couldn’t pass most of the interviews. I had 2 offers for project management positions but didn’t really want to pursue it again.

Thankfully a small tech company liked my diverse background since they need help in multiple areas and hired me on for my old technical role, big increase in comp and remote.

Just keep looking, I was ready to give up. Don’t only look at Amazon, Microsoft, etc there’s a big world outside of EM.

Same problem here OP. Got locked into roles and work that that did not help to make me marketable outside of XOM and now I’m paying for it. I have been and continue to skill up and learn on my own after work and on the weekends, but it just isn’t the same to employers as having an actual position where I was doing the work relevant to the job being applied for. My best suggestion and something I’m starting to do is project-based learning with something you can show at the end of your hard work in a portfolio.

Software engineer. Put in my 2 weeks back on Monday. Granted I've been programming and a computer science hobbyist for years so it really just came down to convincing another employer I had the skills.
