Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Quit now or change roles then quit?

I’m in EMIT and definitely quitting. It seems like a lot of people have left specifically for Microsoft and Amazon. I assume these are mostly cloud roles they leave for? So is it worth quitting now in a role that’s not cloud and starting with a bit lower rank at one of those? Or moving to modern apps where they need so many people, getting a year of experience and 4-5 certs, then quitting for a senior role? Just starting my 3rd year here, so I feel like I’m right between the entry level (still $60k more than I make now) and second level at those companies.

Side note I guess is are most of the people heading to both of those companies primarily in cloud? I’ve primarily worked here during covid so I haven’t met enough people to know a lot of people personally who quit. Still have seen dozens of LinkedIn posts though lol.

Am afraid not.
If you decide to leave in end-Jan 2022, HR will only allow you to encash 1/12 of your 2022’s annual leave entitlement, on a pro-rata basis.
That was what those in my shop got, after taking the PIL option in 2020.

I don't work for EM however, I'm an IT contractor at very lg. corps like EM so I can tell you what the market is like right now. Everything is cloud, AI, and ML. Everything!

If you can get some reasonably good experience before you jump ship, do that and do it fast. Don't stick around too long because who knows what the market will do next. I just started a new contract at one of the big banks so I just went through this process. Hiring is fast and furious right now.

Hope this helps.

This is my plan. EMIT here too.
Quit after 31st Jan 2022. This is to make sure I get the salary raise one more time and cash out the full credited of vacations.

For the role, I would not worry about it so much. I saw my colleagues left with Analyst role. Most of them got a new job with "Architect" role. So it's about how you fabricated your CV and how well you are doing in the interviews.

It’s not that I expect them to look and be like wow you were in cloud for 9 months at XOM, you’re a genius! It’s more like, will I have a significantly better chance of getting the job if I have that experience? If it’s going to give me roughly the same chance for the same role I’m out today. But if it goes from a 30% chance to get a L5 at Amazon instead of an L4 to an 70% chance because I have more experience, then that may be worth it.

Get whatever role you can get at big tech, don’t count on a job change in EMIT to serve as any sort of stepping stone
