Is PIP a career death knell?

I'm just wondering if people who were put on PIP at some point and managed to survive (yes, they exist) have a chance of ever advancing their careers or are they stuck? I'm curious since I know of a few people who passed and are staying at IBM instead of looking for something new, which would be my first instinct. It's hard for me to believe that they really get a clean slate after passing.

Pip means stay and collect a check while the time passes….like a free vacation for 90 days…they can’t fire you….the PIP must play out the full 90 day.

Yeah I seen the biggest POS worker get through a PIP so it is possible. If there is a severance package offered I believe that’s your best case scenario seeing how hot the job market is right now.
If I was given a PIP I would resign immediately so they would see first hand what a mistake they made.

My advise if you find yourself on a PIP, one of two things pertains. Either you have eF’d something up, or your age/salary has targeted you as someone they want gone. Either way, start looking for a new job. If you think the PIP is doable & can get through it, great, then do that. Use that extra time to still start looking.

Worked for me. It was a BS PIP & I easily made it through. Found a much better job and gave IBM the finger after 32 years of hard work. My biggest regret is that I didn’t do it much sooner.

i know a guy that made it to the 100% club got some awards for there great effort, and next quarter was put on a pip, they just walked out the door. never to be seen again. didnt bother with the bu-----t

If you get a pip initiated by your management without being forced, you should move on.

But sometimes there are programmatic pips where HR says everyone who meets X criteria is on PIP. if this latter case they are very survivable.

IF you do survive (first of all congratulations?) it would take about 15 years to get a "clean slate." Everyone you work with now will remember. And before they leave, they will pass it on to anyone new. So it's going to follow you for a while. It will take that 15 years (or more) before you have a cohort who say "yeah, I know this guy is supposed to be some sort of problem case but I've personally never had a problem." Even then, they may say "you can never be too sure."

My point is ... a clean slate is long, long way in the future.

I was PIP'd last year, the PIP occurred 10 weeks after the so call "incident" and completed it no real difference, although the day I was PIP'd I opened 3 concerns with HR for one each for my 2 front line managers and 2nd line manager, plus IBM is blocking customer from hiring me, so as Bill Murray said, "So I got that going for me"..

I know two people who beat PIPs but were both eventually laid off anyway. If I were put on a PIP I would take the severance option and leave. This company sucks. I’m planning my exit in 2022.

You would most likely have to switch divisions if you want a clean slate. The problem as it exists today is PIP’s go up thru 4th lines, so even,if you survive, the 4th line remembers you
