We are opening new stores???

I had no idea we were opening new stores so color me surprised when I read that one opened recently in Kingston. I'm thoroughly confused. I thought B&N was looking to reduce the number of locations not increase it. How are we able to afford new stores when we can't afford enough people in the existing ones to keep them running properly?

Most - if not all - of the new stores opening are replacing old, much larger and unprofitable stores in the same market. Smaller stores, smaller leases, smaller staff.

HaHa!
They look like the old B. Dalton stores. Funny how things turn around.

The new stores opening are also, like, a quarter of the size of the current stores. Less space means less rent to pay and less workers to hire to run the place (if they fully staff up) so they probably figure the new store math works, at least on paper.

I don’t get it either. Kingston wasn’t profitable before the pandemic.
