How sensitive is Allstate when employees leave for competitors? I’ve got a chance to move to a competitor, but I’m not sure if that’s the best idea. Some tell me that it could jeopardize my professional reputation, and others that I shouldn't worry about it at all and immediately accept the offer.

If you're going to a direct competitor of Allstate and give two weeks notice and tell them where you're going, they will end you the day you give notice and not pay you through your two weeks. Unfortunately, this puts you in the position of having to give no notice if you can't go without the pay. You don't have to tell them where you're going, so that would be my recommendation if you want to work through the two weeks and get paid. If you don't tell them where you're going or not going to a competitor and give two weeks, your benefits end on your termination date, not the date you gave notice.
It's NONE of their business!
I went to progressive and didn’t tell them where I was going.. you owe them nothing.
If you tell them, they terminate you on the spot. Best wishes! :)
@kbe- Actually... EVERYTHING said on this post up until mine is true (except for yours).
Yes, it is a Glen thing because the POS has no character and thinks everyone is just like him and would do unethical things during the time left. So yeah, don't say anything until the last minute, if at all.. Too bad this is what it has become.. A true reflection of the leadership running this once great company..
Employment, benefits, etc all end in the day you provide notice to leave.
If you let them know you will be let go immediately…. This is an initiative directly from Glenn. Pretty aweful program. Work your two weeks then let them know when you are ready.
How would taking a new job jeopardize your profession al reputation?
You cant believe everything you read on the internet and nothing you read on this site. With all due respect, Only you can really decide
No need to mention your future plans to anyone if you accept a job offer from another company, no one's business but yours. Not sure why your reputation would be tarnished? I am starting to worry if my reputation will take a hit if I stay at Allstate. I beleive other posts have mentioned if you go to a competitor and inform Allstate of same you will be escorted out quickly. Give notice, take some pto and never return.
Accept the offer if you feel it's a better opportunity. However, don't tell Allstate at all. I have heard stories of people putting in 2 weeks notice to a competitor and Allstate walking them out the same day they gave notice. So let's say you start on a Monday I'd tell Allstate at the end of the day the prior Friday. If you do give 2 weeks notice don't tell them your going to a competitor. Just say your going back to school or something
