Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Midland, how bad is it?

I’ve heard lots of negative things about taking assignments in Midland, is there any real feedback from folks who’ve actually worked and lived there?
Reason for asking is I’m aware of several openings which sound interesting . We don’t have any school age kids and I’m NRE.

Given you chose to engage an anonymous layoff board for career advice, I am certain Houston is a better fit for ya.

I see way less management worship in Midland than I have seen everywhere else in the company.

Whatever you are trying to escape from in Houston this is the same company in Midland so it will follow you.

If you are a CL27 and NRE they will chew you up and sp-t you out.

You will only succeed if you kiss a-s. Toxic culture. They need to get rid of of a lot of people in management. Usually people with no experience on an specific branch (production, drilling) will be moved to management position.

Disgusting...

If you are ok with being a sacrificial lamb in the rankings I’d say go for it!

The culture here in Midland is TOXIC. It starts at the very top of division "leadership" (EG), and has filtered down to all of his little minions. Don't be tempted by the measly 10 % premium either ! The cost of living in Midland is closer to 20 % higher than Houston. I beseech you brother, don't fall for it.

Give someone in Permian a call. You have any contacts?

OP here, CL27 upper ranking . I haven’t been offered anything specific just some talk. I’d definitely rent as I would have no intention of staying in Midland past retirement.
Currently at the campus and a change would be nice to say the least…

Don’t come here - I’d be happy to finish my career here…..

(Campus Culture, 1 hour commutes, high crime, 30 min to go anywhere - no thank you Houston)

Financially you are better off to not go. Cost of living is significantly higher in spite of what company consultant reports say. Everything is more expensive. Food, gas, utilities, housing, dry cleaning, you name it. No HMO health insurance option so pay more on health insurance with less options in Midland and higher costs. If you have health concerns think hard before you accept assignment.

You get out of the housing market if you don’t buy while houses are rising in value pricing yourself out of the Houston market when you return as you don’t ride the upward prices. In Midland home prices are dropping slightly to stagnant and about twice what Houston prices are for a similar house.

Not having kids is an advantage as school situation is a problem and drives you to have to buy in expensive areas to get into a mediocre rather than aweful school.

If supporting Delaware basin recognize the field is a 2.5 hour drive each way from Midland on poor roads. Get ready to work your a-s off.

I heard that if transferred to Midland do not buy a house because if laid off then stuck with house. Just rent.

What CL are you? Ranking out there is a shark tank. I barely escaped back to Houston. If we could get rid of our ranking system Midland wouldn’t be half bad.

The biggest thing to consider is you are moving to a place the company can’t get anyone to go to. As a result the team is overworked and stretched. Look at the age of the team. All young engineers sent out to Midland before they knew they could say no to the assignment. Then consider the PIP and possibility of being marooned in Midland after being fired. Don’t buy a house if you go. Just rent an apartment. Morale is very low as well due to the workload and ongoing PIP.

Attrition is out of control in Midland. That speaks for itself in my book.

If being offered a role ask how the person you are replacing left. Did they quit? We’re they fired?

That post didn’t violate the site standards. Why did it get censored??? It’s troubling that post that conform with site standards are taken down.
