Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Covid Character

I don’t understand the obsession with driving attendance at our Houston campus.

We ask people to come back in person, even after known contact with Covid+ individuals, despite the data saying that vaccinated individuals will spread the Delta variant.

For my nearly 2 decades working here, we have always hammered home “corporate citizenship” and giving back to our communities. Our Houston community has 0 ICU beds available, and yet we think it is acceptable to contribute to the spread of Covid-19.

Even a “minimum” spread should be unacceptable; our management should be bright enough to understand exponents, and the impact of community spread.

These are the same managers who will turn around after Covid and say there is no need for business travel, since we can do everything remotely.

What happened to “courage of conviction”, “actively caring”, “nobody gets hurt” or anything else that was sold as our corporate culture? Are these managers hammering home attendance because we try to justify the extravagant spend on our campus?

Or…. because they are so neutered by Corporate policies on HR and everything else that they are grasping at any straws for control? Really, deeply disappointing.

HL gets tax abatement from MoCo. It is based on a minimum occupancy, that is why some people were recently moved from Campus to HL - to avoid tax penalty.

Campus can’t pay for itself. Something will need to change.

Does it get tax breaks from Harris County?

The campus gets no tax breaks from Montgomery County. The campus is in Harris County.

XOM is truly and purely capitalist company. Unfortunately, it is all about $$$ for big wigs at top without showing any genuine care for employees or their well being. In this case, they are following the leads from schools. Watch when the managers quote schools saying that even schools are back in session and so are we. All the leadership principles are only in books and glossy papers, and are solely expected to be followed for worker bees, managers are optional from following it.

Work from home as much as you can, nobody will challenge you at this point.

Combination of tax requirements for Hughes, sour feeling of having paid for an empty campus, and boomer-trained managers/execs who feel the need for MBWA to prove that people are working and not goofing off.

Honestly, a large part of the drive to populate campus comes from tax breaks the corporation received from Montgomery County. Tax man came knocking and basically said get people back on campus or pay up.
