Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Why are you sticking around?

Jobs in our sector are plentiful right now - including plenty of remote positions for those who have learned to love WFH in the past year or so. I know a lot of people who are working on taking advantage of that but I know just as many who are not satisfied at IBM and are not looking to leave. Why? What is it that's keeping you here?

Same for me I have RSUs vesting mid next year, not to mention other things that will vest at the same period… IBM wants me to stick around longer? They need to feel free to give me more RSUs!

I have RSUs vesting in a year that’s why I’m here. And I’ll probably get another $25k this year. So that’s 2 more years I’ll have to stay.

I stick around:

  1. for the drama
  2. curiosity to see what happens after the split. I'll be on the IBM side of the split. Sometimes the easiest thing to do is to do nothing and just flow from one split/buyout/sell off to another.
  3. I'm already wfh, and have been for several years now.
  4. lazy :)
  5. I'm "fine" with working for IBM, not awesome or great.
  6. Where I'm working right now, it's relatively slow and laid back.
  7. Would rather get laid off so I can get some kind of severance, then find another job.

Are we supposed to quit and go work for some ultra woke Startup?

I prefer easy the $ and working remote where I can be anti-woke.

Mainframe-centric skills with no good on-ramp to FAANG type systems.

Old enough that ageism seems real, working too much to dive into some cert program like AWS. Incorrect pedigree to do something like kernel dev or cool apps like High Frequency trading, predictive analytics, etc.

Call it, stuck in the rut that my resume defines... in an industry that long ago reserved on ramps for recent college grads.

I’m on a good team + good pay + low stress + low effort = hard to beat.

I get that people near retirement might want to stick around IBM and wait for a RA.

For everyone else, think about where you want your career to be at in 1, 5 or 10 years and what it would take to get there?

I get paid pretty well, I don't work hard, I don't work nights, I don't work weekends, I have about 6 weeks of official vacation, but it is really more like 3-4 months counting bench time... yeah, the work is not the most interesting, but I am old so that is OK.
