Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Filling the gaps in knowledge

How long did it take you to supplement your knowledge and skills that were damaged by IBM’s archaic products and processes? I am aware that my skills have atrophied here and I would love to work in a company that is far ahead of IBM when it comes to products and processes.

For a developer, join the AWS free tier good for 12 months. Create some projects/apps/APIs that run on AWS and check code into your git. There are plenty of tutorials.

If you know legacy concepts, it’s not a huge jump…just need to learn the delta. If you’ve been around for a while, you probably already experienced leaps from mainframes to client-server, etc., so you have an idea on what it would take. The plus now is the abundance of resources on the internet.

My 30+ background was mainframe, then Java apps. Took a JavaScript class but should have also taken a REST API class, then played with AWS a bit, then learned the rest (Kubernetes, etc.) on the job at a startup.

I took a lot of classes and got certifications in other company products. It may not be the silver bullet, but I learned a lot about good products out there like AWS. It helped me understand where things are going and ironically how awful the IBM products were.
