Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

I'm not a doormat

I'm just realistic. I have a horrible manager who thinks the louder he yells, the better he manages. For some reason, I'm the target of his outbursts 90 percent of the time. I've been called a doormat by a colleague recently for not standing up to him or reporting him to HR. As if either of those options would result in anything other than my dismissal. I'm not a doormat or an id--t. I've been looking for a new job and the moment I find it, I plan to tell my manager exactly what I think of him. But I refuse to act impulsively and leave my family without an income because some people think I'm a wimp.

I knew a VP that would yell at someone at every staff meeting in front of all department heads. It was horrid sitting in every meeting worried that I might be the target of the yelling.

Finally, in the middle of an around the world trip visiting projects, she received an email during changing planes, instructing her to cancel her plans and return to campus ASAP.

She came into campus in the morning and within 30 minutes of arrival she was sent packing.

I just assume that all of her public unprovoked attacks on employees had caught up with her.

If anyone knows for sure why she was sent packing in this urgent manner, please tell.

The real doormats are found at CSR in Clinton, New Jersey.

You know sometimes it's funny how those golden boy managers get caught. There was a forklift driver that refused to wear PPE. They took her to HR to terminate her, and when she realized that she really was going to lose her job, she said, "Hold up. I have text messages you need to see." Turns out she was in a se-ual relationship with her manager and he was racist. That guy was out of there. Got it on film... She kept her job, but she left within months. My guess is after a lawsuit.

I am sorry you had to go through this. It is not uncommon in EM. You are not alone.

You can even use it to blackmail him! Now that is fighting fire with fire. I suggest that you speak to a lawyer first and get it done legally. (Out of court settlement, always remember to document and take videos!)

Simple solution. A few oranges or bars of soap in a pillow case. Follow him into the bathroom (no cameras) early in the morning or late in the day when no one else is around (great if you find out that he is going in on a weekend or holiday) and whip his a$$. The pillow case with oranges will hurt like he!! but leave no marks when used on the stomach, chest, and back, go for the liver first and he will basically be paralyzed for a while. Have the pillow case in your backpack going in and out of the bathroom (cameras outside the bathroom) then go home.

When he says you did it, deny it. Everyone will believe you, being the whimpy doormat that you are.

Believe me, he will not bother you again.

Record it and go see an outside attorney. Never report anything within XOM. They are all on the same tram: the lawyers, HR, managers, and Executives. They will bury you if you go to them first, cover it up. Been there and done that. They are corrupt and evil and only care about themselves, protecting each other, their salaries and their RSUs. See an outside attorney, sue them, refuse to go back to work because of mental stress, see a doctor, collect your money and find another job.

YouTube and media are your friends here. Remember Keith McCoy and even all the se-ual harassment cases! Great publicity!

Record it with your personal phone and see a lawyer! This is the best surprise you can give these Bullies! Imagine all the sleepless nights they will have.

Besides your career in EM had already ended. How good can you fair under such managers? Go for it! Teach them a lesson they will never forget.

So much for our new culture with new leadership behaviors. My favorite quote- "Same leaders but new behaviors and will be watched closely". Sounds like that was well thought out as the Upstream Strategy!

I know of a senior “leader” who has at least two formal write ups in two separate countries for how he treats people. This “leader” is still in Houston and viewed favorably by management

Good luck. I’ve worked for someone like this in the past. It is awful. Get out of the assignment as quickly as you can.

I left earlier this year and had a very similar situation...yelling and name calling is all too common at this company, by even senior execs. In fact, the higher you go, the worse it seems to get. HR will not take action. Only choice is to get out when you can.

Record it and see a lawyer for advice. You might have something great installed. I am sure your manager will cr-p in his pants!

Good approach. I’ve seen se-ual harassment episodes being covered up, so I know that reporting anything will backfire.

The concept of freely reporting abuse by a Supervisor or Manager at EM is advertised but should not be believed.

I reported a Department Manager for policy violations to HR. This went straight back from HR manager in USA to my Country Manager. To cover up the situation I was threatened with my job unless I wrote to HR Manager in the USA clearly stating that I was dropping the issue. Because the allegations were completely true, the Country Manager immediately forced that Department Manager to retire. They wanted that id--t gone but EM wanted no paper trail on what he had done to me. I was told to do damage control to salvage my career for reporting the issue.

I did the right thing by reporting but my career suffered.

Be very careful reporting your boss even for blatant abuse.

You should report him to HR. The idea that HR doesn’t do anything is not true. They are required to open an investigation (I have worked there before). What will probably happen is that if they find out to be true he will probably get a warning and nothing more, BUT at least he will know you are not to be yelled at anymore. Also, it will be crystal clear that anything he does against you from now on will be a retaliation so he will probably leave you alone. You have to remember that managers in ExxonMobil are useless anywhere else. They have been out of the market for too long and they would never get a similar job elsewhere. The last thing they want is to loose what they have.

PS: I am also against going to HR for anything but in your situation it’s an open harassment and you have witnesses to support it. He probably had complaints before.

Op ...HR has rules against this kind of behavior. When you get ready to leave please please please make sure you turn his a$$ in. I have been in your shoes before and printed out the harassment rules and placed it on his desk. He needs to learn them.

No one should have to tolerate being yelled at. The next time the manager yells, turn around and walk out, telling him you will listen when he's in a more professional mood.

@svx+1coZAQ4R Had witness the same thing too. HR will not do anything to help. And such matters get swept under the carpet. Somehow such behaviours are accepted in EM.

When you find a new job, do not tell EM just yet. Next time your manager yells, yell back, get all your frustrations out and see what happens. Either he gets a slap on the wrist and you leave anyway (because no way management does not know about this manager's behaviour!), either you get fired because of your behaviour. Result is the same: you in a new job with the extra satisfaction that you did more than "tell your manager". "See something, say something", abuse cannot be tolerated.
