People are leaving in droves, in my group management is now trying to hire… at least 5 new people. Yet IBM is continuing laying people right and left!!!

Many of the people with "Knowledge of the archaic IBM products and processes" were part of the large hiring done by IBM in the late 70's until around 84 ( I joined in 81 ). We have survived the many, many RAs that have happen since the 90s and we now have 37+ years. It is the natural progression that we would begin retiring.

Over the years I have learned new skills, but was always pulled back to help out with old Tech issues. Over the last 5 years I have none nothing but the old tech and what new functions IBM has added (I am in systems development). Doing old tech was fine with many of us because we were not looking for a new job outside of IBM and IBM needed our skill set to get done what they wanted done.

So over the next few years expect more of the "older" folks to be leaving. I plan on 1 more year because I enjoy the work and do not let cr-p bother me.

I would be willing to be RA'ed if it would help to save a younger person's job. I have seen this done many times over the years, and have let mgt know I am available.

Sign of the times. There is a cascading effect, once one leaves, then another, it doesn't take much to push the rest out the door. Who wants to stay when they know the workload will be dumped on them without pay increase. The load you up until the last straw makes the donkey kick.

I wonder attrition is the reason why there hasn't been a huge layoffs yet this year!

I've been at IBM for 6 years. I've seen a lot of people leave, but this is insane. Massive number of departing emloyees. Replacing their knowledge of archaic IBM products and processes will not happen easily.

If you can get 50% raise by just switching which is really easy right now compared to slogging with peanuts, why not!

The combination of a management team that took its employees for granted and a hot job market will do that.
