Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Why is Wells Fargo paying big bucks for a CEO who’s only plan is to make us mediocre version of the other big banks?

There are plenty of capable candidates who can follow other leaders’ business strategies for a much smaller paycheck. Followers should come cheaper than true leaders.

I think I could effectively carbon copy our competitor’s’ business strategies for a mere $500,000 per year salary: Bring our efficiency ratio in line with our competitors regardless of impact on quality and service, cut employees, sell off LOBs, offshore everything to India because everyone is doing it, keep your employees and shareholders in the dark, be a Jamie Dimon wannabe, cut HR down to an endless maze of phone trees, destroy employee morale because who cares - it’s a temporary assignment for me. $500,000 per year Max.

Now, a true leader who is a game- changer in the industry? That is what is worth $25 to $30 million or more per year. Give us a visionary leader who is capable of switching things up and forming new business plans and strategies that places Wells Fargo ABOVE the competition. Give us a leader who leads with integrity, and who’s personality and attitude sparks change. Give us a leader who understands that the world is changing and isn’t simply looking to catch up to the status quo. Give us a leader who has a vision and communicates that vision frequently and enthusiastically. Give us a leader who motivates, inspires and galvanizes their teams.

A true leader is worth their weight in gold. Charlie Scharf should have been a $500,000 per year hire. Our sleepy BOD didn’t have the courage to look outside the box.

He’s doing a good job — far better than his predecessors.

If you're hired to ki-l the weeds in a garden, and you just spray poison over the entire thing, yes you did the job you were hired to do, but left the place worse than it would be had you actually approached it in a discerning and planned manner. Wells Fargo's many problems aren't going to go away with increased workloads and brain drain, and the Fed is not going to lift the asset cap because of some stupid efficiency ratio being achieved.

Former WF here (left 2 months ago)… he is doing what he was hired to do. There are different ways of doing it and focus is on a goal that he is being paid to do by a corporation (he is not the owner or founder). Did not agree with strategy and left, does not mean he is doing it wrong. He negotiated and was paid to do a job for a certain salary. Should he have taken job that board paid him “x” amount then come in and said we need more team events? Board wanted someone to do something and he is executing on what he said he would do. I seriously doubt one question in interview process was “how will you boost morale”.

Us as a mediocre version of JPM is 1000% better than where we were before. I’ll take it.

Not everyone agrees with your opinion of our CEO. Just because some may not agree with him doesn’t make him wrong. He’s highly compensated because his decisions impact 250k+ employees and our shareholders, which includes employees and retirees.
How many people are you responsible for?

The Board and Executives don't give a rip snort about morale or the people here. As soon as you understand you're "headcount" and not a human being, you'll be better off, and move on to greener pastures. All you can do is take the paycheck, try to do your job, and find something else. It's NEVER going to change, ever. Ever!

I'm in the same boat. It's either I take a massive pay cut to accept another job, and impact my ability to save for retirement, or stay here and play the layoff game and neither are great options! I've been offered other jobs, but they are all 5 figure base pay cuts. I'm willing to take a cut, but a bath?! At least if I'm going to take it in the azz, I'd like an employer to give me a reach around.

Just going to correct you a small bit:

Unfortunately no one with integrity would take the job.

Does anyone here really think he’s doing ANYTHING that validates his annual pay? Not making the world a better place, not bringing Wells in to the future, not championing his own employees, chopping heads so that he can make even more money for himself. He’s playing everyone for a fool.

Charlie is just doing what has to be done

270k employees to run a domestic bank is absolutely ridiculous. Sloan and Stumpf ran this place into the ground and Charlie is cleaning up the mess

How long does it take for awardee stopk to get vested for upper management? If it the same 4 years as for common people, then we are only half-way in CS & Co reign.
