Thread regarding Ford layoffs

More outsourcing? From article in today's Free Press.

Ford currently has more than 11,000 employees in India whose work support the global business, and the plan now is to "significantly expand" the Business Solutions unit in India in coming years that will focus on engineering and technology, Ford said in its news release. It did not provide specifics on job growth.

I recall 4 years ago when IT did an exercise where each department was told to identify a specified number of people in the US who we needed to terminate and hire in F of I. So, our dept (I was a manager before retiring) needed to fire 4 people who were Ford employees and hire 4 new people in F of I to fill their role. I am still in awe of that move.

Indians never supported Ford vehicles, ever since Ford entered India in 1995, they hated Ford vehicles and Ford is hiring more of them !

I’m glad Ford is shutting down their plants in that country.

In 40 years of IT experience this is what I have observed.

The percent of IT who are exceptionally talent is two, yes 2 percent. This is the same across all races and gender. In the early years of my career the women were at 15% exceptional, but that was only because the few who fought the obstacles to be in IT were the ones who were really passionate about IT.

Until an IT person has 5 years of real work ( not attending meetings and other nonsense), they are more of a drain than an asset. At Ford it requires someone 12 years to get 5 years of experience.

Ford favors cheap (inexperienced) workers. They would rather spin up a team of 100 cheap workers than hire 3 exceptional employees to do the same work. It makes Ford sense - you don’t want to hire anyone smarter or more capable than you are.

The talented workers don’t want to work at a company where they have to continually pull along the dead weight. As a result at Ford a mediocre IT person appears great in comparison to all the marginally competent dead weight.

I have worked with many, many talented people from India in Ford US. I have worked with smart young Ford people who reside in India. The issue is that F of I seems to only hire “freshers” straight out of college and once they get some experience they’re gone because they don’t view Ford as a prestigious job. If that trend continues there will be no experience left. The chances of running a successful business that produces quality products when your most experienced staff has two or three years experience is slim to none.

@1qqp agree H1B should be revamped, but at this point it won’t save Ford jobs.
Ford of India is an easier route to lower costs, and without H1B restrictions.
Cheaters gonna cheat.

Ford of India is only a temporary stop. Indian newspapers report the purge and replenish cycles occurring in India at companies that have been in India longer than Ford. They are also relocating to even cheaper countries. Every time there is a layoff the Indian papers are filled with commenters about unfair it is that “freshers” are taking the jobs of the more experienced. By the time they are laid off they have forgotten that they caused someone to be laid off. Circle of life.

It will be interesting to watch how things play out as ITEK is majority Indian, and those jobs will be shipped to Ford of India.

Some of the antics that occurred at ITEK were crazy. After hours there was one Indian who did the work of his wife, relatives and friends. They were all Ford employees none of which had any skills. They would give this guy their ids and passwords and he would do all their work. This went on for years. They got caught because he went back to India for a month and security noticed that all of these people were signing on from India and also from USA everyday, a physical impossibility.
Then there were the professional interviewee who answered all the interview questions on the video interviews, while the interviewees just moved their lips. That scam got uncovered when the contacting company stiffed they professional interviewee, and the professional interviewee complained to Ford that they weren’t paid. The funny thing is Ford continues to do business with the contract firm and did not fire the people who cheated to get in. The only thing Ford did was require better video quality on interviews with close ups of the candidate.

@1qsy I left a previous job to come to Ford and was part of the 2019 SRD. I keep in touch with a handful of friends that still work at that (previous) company. This is their words - the company has become Little India. Like Ford, they are going for the cheaper labor and with that comes, lower quality.

While I was there I lost track of all the handoffs and KTs I did because we would change contracting companies every few years because another company would put in a lower bid.

The Federal Government needs to revamp their H1B program. Companies lie about not finding American workers with the skills needed for a role. The truth is that companies don't want to pay American wages.

Pay attention to this. He identifies himself as an invader. He speaks of 'Americans' as a group separate from himself. He delights in seeing the downfall of you and your children. He believes he is succeeding on his own merit but fails to recognize that his ascent is a function of economic globalists selling out their countrymen to the cheapest bidder. Unfortunately for Ford the majority of Indian workers aren't of the caliber of a Sundar Pichai or a Kumar Galhotra. Notice that he speaks and acts out of racial self-interest. Notice what will happen to you if you speak and act out of your own racial self-interest. A very brazen way for a 1.2%'er to speak.

Soon the Ford land will smell more like ‘curry’ all over … keep hiring Indians !
Look at the CEOs of most big tech giants, Google, Microsoft, Adobe, MasterCard,.. many others , they are all talented Indians. Don’t complain to Ford management (btw most of the good ones are Indians) if Americans ain’t producing talented babies anymore!

Once you layoff all of US accounting who will answer F of I' s questions? God forbid some unique scenario happens. Questions always come to us. Good luck with that.

Previous poster has good points.
One more lie that Ford management will tell you is that you will be invaluable to Ford if you train F of I to do your job. The story they tell is that F will highly value those who good trainers. Yup they valued them so much they laid them off.

Another lie was that PM positions would always remain in USA. They convinced several people to transition to PM roles after they trained their F of I replacements. Then because the majority of resources were in F of I, management later declared the PMs should also reside in F of I. And you guessed it the USA PM were laid off.

Be very very careful what you believe. Ford management will tell you whatever they think you want to hear.

To all the new hires and FCGs in the U.S. get a clue quick. You bought into HR's recruiting lie of that YOU are Ford's future. No shame because us older workers did too long ago but we are riding it out now only due to retirement and pensions. See the writing on the wall, Ford is outsourcing jobs out between Mexico, China, and India due to lower salary rates. You are only the "bridge" headcount to be used while they eliminate the older workers and bring the overseas staff on board and up to speed. Be smart, the job market is hot and you are young and right now can better deal your situation. This is some serious mentorship advice. Don't let your ego get in the way. Don't believe the lies you are being fed. Regardless of what you think of your older peers, we really don't want to see more people in our situation having to worry about their livelihood after giving so much to a company that treats their employees like disposable 'units' as BCG referred.

Well keep outsourcing the jobs Ford. Someday your current & former employee's will stop buying your products. Loyalty & Respect is a two way street. Even though your last name is Ford does not mean you are the right person to run a company.

Ford Motor Co. announced early Thursday that it will dramatically change its strategy in India, shutting down manufacturing operations that have been bleeding the automaker while at the same time investing in software developers, data scientists, research and development engineers and finance professionals.

You thought your job at Ford was safe? Unless you live in India, don’t be so sure.

It has been a mandate in our area of IT for quite some time that 50% of staff be in Ford of India. Our additive to the mandate was that ALL future backfill due to attrition /retirement must be filled @Ford of India. Given the demographics of the area within three years it will be 80% in Ford of India.

Similar things happening in other areas such as financial, engineering etc.
Basic math shows there won’t be a need for most of the Ford office buildings.
