Thread regarding Ford layoffs

My estimate timeline for his departure:

Coming from a great company like Apple, he won’t stay a year at Ford.
From BusinessWire:
Doug Field joins Ford as chief advanced technology and embedded systems officer, reporting to President and CEO Jim Farley

Field will partner closely with Hau Thai-Ta-g, Ford’s chief product platform and operations officer, to create the next generation of Ford’s connected products and experiences at the foundation of the Ford+ growth plan

Field will lead Ford’s efforts to develop the next-gen Blue Oval Intelligence tech stack to deliver smart, connected vehicles and services that improve over time through constant updates. He and his team will be responsible for delivering delightful, intuitive and always-on experiences for customers

He will oversee the company’s Embedded Software and Hardware organization currently consisting of Vehicle Controls, Enterprise Connectivity, Features, Integration & Validation, Architecture & Platform, Driver Assistance Technology and Digital Engineering Tools

Most recently VP, Special Products, at Apple, Field also has held key leadership positions at Tesla and Segway

DEARBORN, Mich., September 07, 2021--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ford Motor Company today named Doug Field as the company’s chief advanced technology and embedded systems officer as it continues to advance its Ford+ growth plan.

Field joins Ford from Apple, where he served as VP, Special Projects. Before that, he was senior vice president, Engineering, at Tesla. His appointment to Ford is effective today, and he reports to Ford President and CEO Jim Farley.

Next up Mr Field will be painted as a Car guy, but not as cool a car guy as Jimmy Car-Car. He will be in Jimmy Car-Car’s pit crew at his racing events because he is such a righteous grease monkey.

Long and short of it is he is a job hopping opportunist. He saw how long Ford put up with Wacky Hacky the Hatchet-Man until they rolled his addled rear out the door. As a former FCG he was taught well how to BS. Essentially skill number one they teach them. Did I say BS? Excuse me I meant to say "Leadership Skills". He'll roll around for a couple years doing the honeymoon organization/ Town Hall speaking tour. Sitting on the end of a stool with an open collar shirt and suit jacket trying to project an 'I'm cool' vibe. Meanwhile the siccophants will gather and sing empty praise in order to garner opportunity for themselves. Near year 3 it will become apparent he is either incapable or unable to deliver on any of the BS he sold in his interview. Soon after that we will see a quickly cobbled up PR release saying he has left the company to pursue other opportunities.

Chief advanced technology and embedded systems.
What?
So this the ingredient missing from Ford, instead of an entire a revamp of engineering and development and improving the godforsaken quality ? SMH.

Actually, I believe Field will be perfect at Ford for the rest of his career. He was not a success at either Tesla or Apple, so he becomes just another mediocre VP at Ford, where he collects millions in salary until he retires. It seems fair that whatever stock options he was given are already underwater today.

Well, let’s face it. He was forced to leave from Apple and Tesla since his performance was not up to their standards. Apple and Tesla’s worst employees are the type that will be the best at Ford. However, at least he’s not a furniture guy! That hire was absolutely d-mb and ridiculous, but not as bad as the train station! Fire Billy from the Board!

It appears that Field’s job with “special projects” at Apple was a failure, what makes us think he will do any better at Ford?

This guy may be good, might even be a benefit to the company. But, right now we need 100% focus on fixing our products and the warranty issues.

Honestly at this point as far as hiring more and more executives for fake good PR.....I'd rather just bring Mark Fields back.

If you read into this guys BIO you will see he does not stay any where that long. Did Apple even offer a counter offer? In looking at his background he is not a electrical engineer but a Mechanical engineer. Guy is a professional job hopper. I give this guy three years top. He will leave.

LMAO on the Ford PR wing freep reporting that it is a Huge Coup and they stole someone from Apple and Tesla.
Why not report that Ford has no growth path so people must leave after a few years to gain real experience?
Why not report real reasons behind job hopping? Yeah I know one doesn’t want to air dirty laundry, but in that case just report facts instead of a bunch of hype.?

Wow - he ought to fit in just fine at Ford Motor Company. His last role was VP of "Special Products" at Apple. Think of it - Apple makes money from the phone and their watch (and a little bit from the iMAC). And they have tons and tons and more tons of money on their balance sheet to waste (on special products). Let me be clear - Ford does not have tons and tons of money to waste - and they are still d-mb enough to buy a dilapidated train station in a third world city. And most likely, an Apple Car wasn't even one of the special products at Apple! He was just playing in the sandbox at Apple with a useless title making lots and lots of money for himself. He will fit in fine at Ford!

And think of it, even if he is someone great with tons of knowledge and leadership skills -- he still will be surrounded by hundreds if not thousands of useless, inept executive and management people at Ford. Not exactly an Apple culture to get anything accomplished in.

He has been switching companies for years. Ford offered him more money than Apple, and he is coming for his money. Nothing else. He will be here for several years - at least 5 to grab as much cash as he possibly can in that time. He will keep a token house here in Michigan (token being 10 times better than mine, but something he could care less about). His real house will be back in California or some other high luxury location. He will have his condos in several other resort locations. And he will milk Ford Motor Company for some extra cash to live his lifestyle. And he is going to make some people's lives here at Ford miserable in order to prove he is worth that much money! And it is not going to be VP's at Ford that he makes life miserable on - think LL4 and lower.

At least he has a degree in Engineering and two master’s degrees. The lack of talent in our current management ranks is clear in my current manager, who needed seven years to complete a bachelor’s degree in General Studies.

The fact that we have to hire new VPs from outside the company reflects the fact that we have no depth of talent in our management ranks.

You know what? Ford probably thinks that just because he was an FCG he will understand the corrosive Ford culture :). After tasting Apple, Ford will be like bitter raw cranberries for him.
Given some people left within 2 years, some within 6 months and one IT person leaving even before joining (LMFAO), I will give him 12 full months.
It will be funny to come back to this thread after he leaves to check our predictions :).

Ya, don’t think he’ll be leaving just yet. Just a wild guess, but he could be coming back to take over once “ I’m the cousin of ‘Mr. I Live In a Van Down by the River” gets booted in a year or two. Seems to be the pattern lately.

Either that, or the Apple car program must be really bad and dead in the water.

I worked with him on the first Taurus program when he was starting his FCG program. I recall having dinner with him at his apartment in Southfield. Nice guy - quiet and reserved back then - I was always amazed at his career path - you never know, right?

Shocked he came back to rust belt/old school Ford - perhaps he was looking for a challenge?? Hope he succeeds - the company needs him.

I believe he was a Ford FCG in the late 80s and left Ford after about 5 years.
