At what age is a prospective candidate considered “too old” to hire in this industry? I may not be right, but it seems to me that this age ceiling is falling more and more. Companies seem to want younger and younger candidates. Young people do not think of it as a problem now, but no one is forever young.

Look and find out. A lot of people in their 50's & 60's were able to get jobs still. Capitalize on your skills and experience. Of course it is difficult but if you have a track record of problem solving and projects (which many young people do not), you should be able to find something (not right away but down the road - in a few months probably).
