Thread regarding IBM layoffs

How long did it take you to start fitting into the corporate culture?

I had a little more expectations from this company and I thought I would fit in faster, but it doesn't seem to be so easy at IBM. I face situations where some information is not shared with me, and it should be. I may be exaggerating, but I have a feeling that some colleagues are deliberately making it harder for me to work here. I just don’t know what to do to fit into this kind of corporate culture.

I tried for 34 years with many different job roles from very technical to 'parrot'. Was never was able to adopt to its (corporate) mentality. Stayed for the physical convenience of a regular paycheck and left a year ago for mental peace. Have not looked back since. No regrets even though I should have left long before.

IBM has no culture, so there is no way you can fit into this company. As long as you get a paycheck, enjoy.

I think there's nowhere to fit in.
Took me a couple years to realize - the IBM culture is that you are fully and completely on your own.

Your manager will not help you, more likely the opposite. The colleagues may be okay but the good ones can get RA-ed at any moment. So your work environment, well-being and progress is really only as good as you can set it up for yourself.

"It's a complete job-security environment. "

Except that RA's are always on the horizon... LOL!

I was there 7 years and still couldn't figure it out. It's so siloed, you only get a picture of your world only. Cr---y way to promote learning and selling services to clients.

It's a complete job-security environment.

Ibm has too many old people who won't share a single thing as they're afraid of being replaced and laid off.
This kind of behavior creeps into people who stay here for sometime and tbh i don't blame anyone because the company has instilled a culture of fear with layoffs, pips etc.

If you're young, learn, read and practice to get out of this shitshow instead of trying to "fit in" here. At other places you'll see people are enthusiastic to build teams who are productive and are definitely paying way higher than ibm.

Even the legacy companies like orcl, cisco, msft etc. are paying way more, stocks, variable pay etc. And all these affect the company culture

I found the culture to be 'management is smarter than you' and the best way to fit in is to agree and do what they want and unfortunately deal with the consequences as well.

I'll answer your question with an anecdote: I recently (voluntarily) left IBM after more than 7 years. On my last day, my manager pointed out that I had never once referred to IBM as "we" - it was always "they" ...

information hiding is a major problem at IBM. There is no performance culture at IBM and hence no accountability. Id--ts become managers and everyone is out to protect themselves. Higher up you go it’s a club where everyone has each other’s back. Board of Directors is paid for and everyone at the top is comfortable. There is just enough “good people” left to make cool marketing headlines like 2 nm chip which is 5 years away min so more bu-----t. IBM is a finance and marketing company and has not changed. Red Hat culture will take 2023 min to start showing if it’s not ki---d.

There’s no corporate culture. That’s long gone. Your colleagues and even your manager are always competing with you. Get used to it or get out. IBM is a horrible place to work
