Most people I know have gotten into this industry through family/friends or lied about it. Those who have not (which is rare) are struggling and will likely always be cogs. Is this what tech is now

This was a great industry when I first entered it many years ago. Today it SUCKS!

Really? That surprises me, as it doesn't tally with my experience as a hiring manager or individual contributor over the last 30 years.
Just like your never trust anything on the Internet, 99.99% of the applicants lie about their experiences, responsibilities, etc. I knew so many of these liars in HV and other industries.
Everyone I know has gotten in with a reference. I have caught 100% people saying otherwise lying.
