Finding a new position as software developer

Being out of the interview game, I have noticed how hard it is for a software developer to find a new position. The interview process is lengthy, inclusive of Hackerearth tests to even get a first interview. Once an interview is granted, you need to do whiteboard sessions and go through several rounds of interviews. The list of required technologies is crazy. I can see how new computer science grads are the desired choice as the interview process seems to be geared around what they have learned recently in school. In the real world, I've always found that you use about 20% of the available technologies about 80% of the time. Knowing a ton of tech is great, but most jobs will have you work with a few core technologies and that is what you will use. Your skillset in the others will fade a bit to the point where you would probably fail a Hackerearth test if you had to take one in a prior tech that you knew but haven't worked with in months or years. In software development, it seems like working for a company for a long time can almost be a detriment when looking for a new position, depending upon the tech stack you use in your current company and what is now being required or in vogue and what you once knew but haven't worked with in quite some time.

So if you are up to it suck it up and start practicing coding on those coding websites every day at least for few hours. You are in the most competitive market for software developers and this is a good thing.

is the market flooded with developers or is there too much H1B or workers from other countries here on VISA competing with US workers.

Definitely there are plenty of foreign H1B workers who will become US citizens. And this is a good thing as this is the reason why Tesla will be the top automotive company in the free world and not Mercedes or BMW.

Well, the market is flooded with too many developers and the employers can afford to be choosy. Do you have other skills besides this one? Try to combine few diverse sets of skills and advertise them appropriately in your resume. That is the only chance to beat the college grads for a job; remember you will be more expensive than them to the prospective employer. And frankly software development is no longer cutting edge stuff unless you have worked in some specialized group of a specialized company. Advertise a skill which does not deteriorate with age but instead becomes polished and more sought after which will make you more valuable. Do not discount those coding website , practice on those good amount of time daily, think very seriously about the language of choice and algorithmic aspects ; ignore the technological and harware aspects - the employers are not interested in those..

Your skillset in the others will fade a bit to the point where you would probably fail a Hackerearth test if you had to take one in a prior tech that you knew but haven't worked with in months or years.

Troll get away from here.. Should I say a prayer against goblins and trolls to remove you from this site?

What does this have to do with a layoff site. You need to post this on "Developer Interviews Monthly Digest"
