That’s the biggest mistake I’ve ever made. At one time I turned down quite a solid offer because I was thinking about severance pay. Lesson learned.

As of now there is still a policy pretty much the same as it has been for awhile. I looked for it and found it on the HR site. Maybe do some homework.
If there's no policy, they can make it up every time they have a RIF.
Rumor in Fremont is severance gets capped at 30 days after a period where you are able to apply for internal positions like IBM.
There will always be some type of severance policy. It's probably being reworked to not be as generous as in years past.
I'm afraid to ask. Is the severence policy cancelled?
As someone who got hit a few years back, it's WAY better to leave on your own terms, unless of course you already almost have an offer pending when you get hit.
You never know if it will take you one month or one year to land your next job. It only took me 3.5 months, but it took my manager 13 months to find his next job so it worked out great for me, but not so great for him. Who wants to be in that lottery?
Simply let your manager know that you hope you are selected next time a layoff comes. It’s that simple. It will be much easier for your manager to make a very tough decision. I know people who did this with success.
Leave while you can. Never hope for severance pay, it's a myth like dry land.
