Light Reading web site: "Windstream pushes away from Dycom amid fiber buildout"

"The US fiber broadband industry appears to be poised to enter a historic period of growth. And Windstream wants to control its own fiber fate as a result."

"'We decided to in-source a substantial portion of our construction needs as part of our multi-year, multi-billion dollar fiber network investment program,' Windstream spokesperson David Avery wrote in response to questions from Light Reading. 'We expect this program will allow us to more closely manage construction costs, quality and timelines.'"

"Although that's clearly good news for the 1,000 technicians Windstream has promised to hire for its five-year, $2 billion fiber build project, it's not necessarily what executives at Dycom wanted to hear."

It’s going to be a total disaster with “leadership” fully qualified to make a spreadsheet and have 50 conference calls a week. No clue about how to manage people let alone union crews and no one to blame outside of WS for the inability to keep up with the work.
Good luck!

Windstream sold off its network, lost a major lawsuit over doing so then went bankrupt due to that.

Now it wants its own network again?

What a clown show.

“False, alot of those technicians will stay on as outside plant techs”

That is true for only the ones that are in market and haven’t received their job elimination letter.

Windstream employees are damaged. They would rather see layoffs then massive hiring.

Construction jobs DO NOT equal technician jobs. A fiber outside plant is way easier to maintain than copper. I would love to see the numbers of what's required after a network has been commissioned.

False, alot of those technicians will stay on as outside plant techs. Windstream hiring and doing its own work is not a bad thing. This is a good thing.

If anyone reads glassdoor they will see that our Rating is 3.2 over ‎1,776 votes.
It's going to be really hard to hire someone for these positions. Construction jobs
are temporary NOT permanent.

Anyone applying here would be in desperation or currently extended unemployment. Keeping
this in house makes no sense, Outsource it and write it off!.
