There is no clear career path for me at Allstate and I am very aware of that. It’s high time to consider a new approach because I’m stuck here in a job with no possibility of progression and I’m just wasting my time. I would love to stay in this industry, but I don’t even know how much it is still possible to grow a career in other insurance companies. A lot of people advise me that it would be best to make a sharp turn and change the industry completely.

Definitely had the same question before I left. Don’t let it intimidate you...the grass may be vividly greener at another carrier. I was worried about the same thing, but happily resigned and accepted a job with better pay and benefits for an easier workload. I couldn’t have asked for much more. Now I’m noticing how much better things are in terms of work/life balance. Allstate just isn’t up to speed...it’s seriously backpedaling in so many ways.
Have a frank discussion with your leader. Ask why someone who did none of the “skills of the future” training and does bare minimum continues to get promoted. Unfortunately you’re either “one of their people” or you’re not. If you’re not, it is best to move on.
I’ve worked for Allstate for 10 years and I’m on my third position/promotion. I started out around $40K and now above $70K with room to grow. If you don’t see opportunities in your department, consider other departments. If you look higher up the food chain, most folks have worked in different departments as they’ve moved up in their careers.
agree.. same here. it was my first insurance job. I felt i had to get experience before leaving,, but f- that, looking back what a waste of my time. I mean maybe 2 yrs and then move on. There really is NO career path at that place. Its like working in limbo but more on the hells side. its like you work your a-s off year after year and the company makes billions of dollars and slowly bilks you for your benefits and retirement. That place really is a craphole of a company.. however I do think that personal lines insurance is going bye bye as an industry overall. Its definitely not a career like it used to be and as the industry consolidates more and more (e.g. monopolizes) things will just get harder for whatever poor bastages are left to dredge along telling themselves "its a good job. better than any other job ive ever had" Bottom line get a job with the government.. job security and way better benefits.
It’s Allstate. I’m with another smaller carrier now, it’s a stressful job in general but every day no longer feels like an uphill battle. I don’t have to work late and on the weekends anymore just to keep up.
If I had known then what I know now, I would have left sooner. Allstate was my first insurance job - I just didn’t know any better.
