Poor housing inventory, often poor condition homes, yet also expensive. What everyone else said about schools, daycare, and healthcare. The benefit is you get out of Houston. The downside is that Houston doesn’t seem as bad once you experience Midland. It is much less insulated from the bo-m and bust cycles, and this is the root cause for many of the issues. Avoid moving if at all possible.

If you like to travel flights out of Midland are usually much more expensive than you are used to paying in Houston. Some people drive to Dallas and fly from there to save money but it makes for a very long trip that way.

If you have any medical conditions think seriously. The hospital system doesn’t come anywhere close in quality to what is available in Houston. Appointments for specialists require weeks of waiting.

The locals will protect their own as much as they can. The good old boys network is very much alive. It goes both ways though as the imports typically are gunning for the locals and protecting their friends from Houston.

Get a big SUV and pray when you leave your house. The roads are very dangerous. The state hasn’t kept up with the demand so roads are crumbling and the sand trucks, tank trucks, etc crash into people all the time.

Highest gasoline prices in the state because all the pipelines go out of the area and gas has to be trucked back to Midland from the refineries. Everything is expensive in general because if you finish high school you can get a high paying job in the oilfield.

Everything costs more and is in short supply. Want to send your kids to pre-K? You better camp out starting at midnight the day register opens. Swimming lessons? Stay up until midnight again to register online the day it opens and maybe get a spot.

The cost of living is much higher. There are very few houses on the market. The ones that are will cost way more than Houston. The yards are tiny because the cost of water in the desert is so high. If you don’t buy a new house be prepared to need significant remodeling and have dust leak in as old houses weren’t built as tight as new ones.

The schools are seriously underperforming. Plan on putting your kids in mediocre overpriced private schools or homeschooling if you have a stay at home spouse.

I heard that the company was now looking not to move people out to Midland, after laying off those who wouldn’t move. Any one hear about this one?

Do the cops still hide in the bushes along Loop 250 to pick off speeders?

You move to Midlands at your own risk, Pal! Everyone here is related to someone so you will be the sacrificial sheep when sh-t hits the fan! Cost of living up the roof and no schools if you have kids....

The premium doesn’t cover the high cost of living and schools are non existent. Good luck. Can you turn it down?
