Why do we still have forced rankings when other companies have scrapped them?

Many others have scraped them however there are still ones that keep it around. Amazon has a relatively high % forced ranking structure. From stories I've heard, people are hired just to through them into the bucket for that team.

Because, even though management tells the lower ranks that it is acceptable to make a few mistakes, management can never admit to a mistake. Look how long it took them to ever admit that we paid too much for XTO and that Kearl was a mistake. Getting rid of forced rankings would be admitting a mistake.

Management also wants you to use judgment and not follow the processes blindly. Forced rankings is a process that allows them to reduce staff without much true judgment.

Btw mother mobil got rid of individual ranking system but Lou noto decided to sell out, looking back mobil shouldn't have gotten bought out

I think your wrong my friend. Many large corporations evaluate accomplishments of what teams accomplish. Individual rank is a small part of success in today modern business. Again, our corporation is writing the classic textbook example of failure to change with this system of performance review.

Team accomplishments mean absolutely nothing of merit in the xom performance outcome. Sole based on individual perception by others.

@cbn+1beZILVT - every company has rankings, it's the lack of bell curve that makes XOM the outlier, along with competing directly with your teammates. Also at the other big tech cos, its much more "how are you performing" in relation to your identified objectives and not "well i had to stick someone in bottom quint and we decided someone in a completely different org that has no job overlap to you was doing their job slightly better though not in any quantifiable way other than me and the supervisor are buddies and made an agreement"

What are some large companies that don’t have forced ranking systems? Genuinely curious. I thought Amazon had them (at least for the bottom % of workers). Not sure about other oil and gas companies.

An executive once told me they knew the ranking system was bad, but it was not enough of a problem to warrant starting a project and resources, dollars and time to replace it with a new system.

Because those who could change the system have benefited from the current system. If it changes it may be to their detriment. Why would they change a system they benefit from?

They looked around the industry and decided this way was a change with no real positive changes for employees, but opportunity to downsize the org, this system is a disabler for collaboration.

Because we are not modern, arrogant, fixated on past methods, bias led by people 100% rewarded by the system. It's the fastest way of improving corporate culture by eliminating this system.

Because this is a meritocracy, obviously. That’s why none of us have gotten raises since the beginning of 2020 regardless of performance.
