Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Female Employees Leaving UP

I do not want to hear another word about UP supporting female employees. Lance appointed a new EVP of Law. Under him is now a male dominated VP staff who belittles employees. Men and women both but mainly women. If I have to hear about grace and patience frim him one more time I will pu-e

No chance of promotions especially if you are female. Female attorneys and staff are required to do administrative tasks for attorneys that take up so much time and keep up on case work at night or after hours. Not male attorneys omg no and yet keep budget down to literally nothing even though Senior Staff cannot keep costs down. People are putting tons of hours but yelled at for not working enough. One VP out right belittles his staff. Of course if you are his favorite you can dump work on everyone else and complain all day about how much you work.

I know everyone has it bad. I just wish they would out right say, yeah we have no respect for you. I guess it was basically put to us if you don't like it find another job.

UP used to be a dream job. Now it's just abusive and sad. I've heard horror stories on how employees were treated in the field. I always felt we were lucky and proud of the law dept. No more.

I wonder how many female attorneys and staff are going to leave or continue to be forced out before the EVP addresses the mismanagement by his Senior Staff? He is setting the example that their behavior is acceptable and with out consequence. This is failed leadership.

I am a cisgender male in the UP law department. I can confirm that everything said in this thread is accurate. I go to work everyday amazed that the shoe has not yet dropped on the misogynistic culture in our department. Unfortunately, it seems that UP only cares about supporting “UP cheerleaders” internally and there is no place for people that aren’t fully “supportive.” We have either learned to stay quiet or have been fired/laid off.

I am a female and I work in the Law Department. I will not give specific information about what I have experienced, for obvious reasons. I WILL say that a culture of retaliation exists within the Law Department such that I would NEVER feel comfortable coming forward to ANYONE about ANYTHING.

This is unfortunate, but it is the reality.

This article is spot on. The bottom line is, even if you love the work you do for UP, everyone is unhappy with the leadership. They’re so out of touch with the staff and will only feign concerns when someone leaves. But if you pay attention at all, you will see that everyone feels like they can’t say anything negative or be honest about their concerns because they fear retaliation. Even comments made in anonymously filed reports or made “in confidence” with your supervisor or to HR (which is basically a non-existent entity) will eventually be explored until the name of whoever filed the report is discovered. Put your happy face on. That’s how you survive. Women are leaving UP frequently because of how discouraging, demoralizing, and toxic the male leadership regards working mothers, work-life balance and smart women who desire career advancement. It’s “meet the budget,” “work the extra hours,” “do the work of 5 people,” and “make us look good doing it” or you’re out. The fact that unhappy employees cannot express concerns for fear of retaliation or being called “gossiping” or any other similar description used to describe unhappy people (women, namely) is a huge problem - in ethics, especially. UP has failed to prove it can be a competitive workplace in the modern world, and that’s not even referring to pay and benefits.

I am sorry you feel the way you do. However, I think things are finally looking up. Law has gone through many uncomfortable changes just like all depts. I think things will get much better now. We will always be busy in the law dept. Unfortunately the lawsuits keep coming in. I have never heard of anyone being treated poorly. Just a lot of gossip and speculation. It is not high school. Do your job. The work is there if you want it. Long hours and over time are pretty much expected from all dept. Law is no different.

Under R F things really began the decline for the Law Department. She left for a EVP position in the insurance industry in the Chicago area (and never moved to Omaha in the first place). Sorry to hear that things have fallen even further

On a side note, the law department could alleviate some work load if the company started operating ethically, morally, and in "good faith." I'm sure there has been a huge increase in civil suits and other litigation over the last few years with how they have gone about this "restructuring." Couldn't make it painless but could have been accomplished without tarnishing the shield and history permanently

Agree with everyone that is saying it’s this bad everywhere. The executive team here just needs to ALL be fired. Really not sure what our Board does, but now would be the time to show the people doing the work that they matter. Lance needs to go along with the entire senior staff. He!l fire the top 20 executives here..., not a single one will be missed. More than likely nothing will even be affected business wise but morale will go up. The complete and total lack of leadership will drive this company into the ground. This is what happens when only unqualified friends get promoted and no one else even has a chance. The good old boys club here has gotten away with so much and that’s why they think treating women the way they are treated here is okay. If a woman says something or points it out it’s her fault, she is the troublemaker. Irony in all this is that our “Chief HR Officer” is a woman. She lets this happen. I don’t understand how people, especially women in the field do it. Go out risk your life... get $hit on.., then be told safety is priority as we derail every other day.

Everyone is abused equally here including managers and administrative staff. The only ones escaping this are the execs. I am sorry for what’s happening to your department, but this is a continuation of what’s been going on elsewhere for the past 3 years.

For the id--ts making comments about women talking about there kids; you apparently have a problem with women employees and probably women in general. If you don’t like hearing about someone’s family, walk away from the conversation. If you can’t get away from the conversation, politely ask them to change the subject if them talking about children makes you so uncomfortable. With all the things going on in the company, it’s unbelievable that this petty cr-p is the main thing in your mind.

All of UP management needs to get their own house in order BEFORE sending even one message to anyone else about diversity, inclusion, or any social injustice propaganda. UP can tell lies, all managers at UP can repeat the lies, but they can never make a lie become truth. I am sorry to the OP and everyone else who read this message who has ever been mistreated at UP. None of you are alone.

How about the UP paint a locomotive with the theme of "us against them". On the sides they could paint a picture of them stealing money from the employee. They could also paint a picture of the execs sh1tting all over the employees, bowing to the shareholders, or a picture of them relaxing at Selma farm with the employees holding it all up on a cloud. If they want a little transparency, then that would be a very good start if they were actually honest about transparency.

They need to have the “we are one” “big boy” and “employee appreciation” locomotives in a consist together because UP gives us one big boy from behind all the time.

I didn’t read the entire post cause it was super long, but I did want to mention that I knew one female superintendent in the northern region and they fired her. I think they really like firing lower level executives like that. Give them just enough power to feel important and bam.
