Internal Transfers?

Is it hard to transfer from a group to group? I've recently joined and I saw a position that'd be a better fit for me but I am afraid I'll be flagged as a 'jumper' and that my manager may not like it. Please share any info or advice you may have.

I am not having luck getting a recruiter to call back. They do not want to keep us.

Generally you want to wait a year before moving positions but 6 months is the minimum. I don't think HR allows moves before 6 months unless there is an HR valid reason (harassment, other issues). Other than that, Charlie has been on the record about how long people spend in a position and he thinks they should move more often.

IMO this is so people don't build lasting relationships (despite "collaboration"). You do get better pay just moving every couple years or so rather than waiting for a decent annual raise.

This place is great for internal moves! I was a teller, then moved to a BSC role leading projects. Then i moved to a Technology Manager role and am now an Engineering Manager!

Much easier and faster to get an external offer.

I moved laterally after many attempts to move upward. My age worked against me for sure, I am sure.

I like my new team and am glad now I moved because my old unit mostly got laid off.

One thing about experience, you’ve been there, saw that and see it coming when they are done with you.

You younger folks, don’t let moss grow on your feet because when a company is done with you, they will cut you loose without a second thought, no matter who you are or what you have done.

I’ve moved several times internally, and it’s one of the advantages of a big company like this. There are always opportunities. It helps if you know someone in the new group, but I’ve successfully gotten more than one internal promotion without knowing anyone. Good luck!

These days it can be very hard to move across the company. WF people are simply not wanted, they'd rather hire external, even though it typically costs more to do so.

I did it after 17 months. So it can be done if your skill set aligns however I did know many folks that knew the hiring manager that could vouch for me. Network an introduce yourself and sell your skills through email after applying.

Just put on your resume that you are the son in law of the ceo of another large bank whose inititals are J.D. You will get fast tracked to a top role here.

It really depends on your skill set. I did 5 internal transfers in 7 years, doubling my salary by the end. If your skills are in demand, it’s really not that hard to move around.

You can't move to another position if you've been with the company for less than 12 months unless you have permission from your manager to do so.

Its harder to get an internal job here than it is outside the company! HR and the HMs only like JPM Chase people. If you put you work at Chase on your resume you will have tons of calls and interviews. I bet they will even offer you stock options, company car and 7 fig salary.

formal policy says you can't post unless you've been in current position 12 months.

It can be hard to move internally, especially if you don’t know someone in the other area who can put in a good word for you. Maybe ask the hiring manager for an informational interview to learn more about the team and to see if it would be a good fit for you someday… then base your next steps on how that conversation goes.
