I know it’s the domain of science fiction, but is it also amazing to me that they never try to keep anyone, even best of the best employees, after giving notice?

They gave a very half assed attempt to keep me from leaving. Felt like my manager was just going through the motions and already knew there was no amount of money that would keep me at that point.
Depends on your role. Why try to keep grunts when you can just hire someone cheaper off the street?
Saw it happen once, but that was more than 20 years ago. The person left anyway.
I think most companies have lost sight on the importance of their people. I don't think it even crosses anyone's mind, everyone is worried about their own jobs and just don't care. To be fair I have never once had a company care about me leaving, its almost like they immediately show you how little they really cared when you do leave. Its ok, this company and their customers suffer greatly for it.
Goodbye parties are a thing of the past at this point with how crazy the turnover had been. You'd be having multiple every week.
Nope, I left right as the office was sending everyone home due to Covid. I don't think they were surprised I put in my notice, but let me work my two weeks notice at home. I'm sure I was replaced with someone cheaper in another state not called California. My bosses boss seemed a bit miffed I was leaving, almost jealous I was getting out of the s*&@ show and had somewhere else to go instead of dealing with being on the bottom end of her thumb when she pressed down. I handled it with bliss and didn't show the slight bit of annoyance that she didn't acknowledge my contributions to the team over the 6+ years I was there. At least my direct manager expressed her thoughts that I would be missed and was sad to see me go. There are some people there that are human. My bosses boss has already left now or got the axe, maybe I gave her the idea, not that she could ever admit it.
Not a word from anyone after almost 24 years, no thank you, a team lunch, a card, shots of Jagermeister? Only a meeting with my CSL to return my equipment after about a month. What a total lack of dignity and respect.
CSL was riffed about 6 weeks later.
Worse than that, they cut you as soon as you give notice. No chance to say goodbye to your team members, no goodbye luncheon after 10 plus years! You’re DEAD to them if you decide to better yourself at another carrier.
They don't care. You are nothing but an NTID in a system to them and a string of metrics that they can terrorize you with. You are/were nothing but an expense whose pitiful lowball wages were just a blemish on Tom and Glenn's bottom line. The powers that be in this company don't care if you live or die let alone work here.
I didn't even get a thank you for my service. No exit interview, nothing. I brief call from my former manager to explain the process. 5 years of my life wasted. Found a wayyyyy better carrier to work for. It's not perfect, but the culture is better and way less stressful.
