How good do you think their job is? Who would like to be a manager at UP?
Despite the fact that many believe that managers in UP do nothing, I would not like to be a manager in this company even for a single day. I can’t wait to get out of here and forget I’ve ever worked here.

UP use to pull their management from the older guys that knew how to do the work and treat the employees. Now days all they want are drones that have no brain and will do exactly what they are told to do no matter how stupid it is. Well when you hire monkeys in a company ran by fat pigs all you get is a zoo.
Rome Green is the best
Its easy to comment on a matter that the agreement forces knows nothing about. What does a UP manager do? Constantly combs the inventory its easy to think cars just move naturally, nope. Think how many cars get lost in industry tracks, slough tracks, customer billing errors, etc. Those cars need to make connection and dwell is the name of the game. Safety, most agreement employees think its harassment yet look at all incidents around the railroad. If things are not monitored the simple mind thinks oh it will take care of itselfs. Rules are written in blood and most have been scaled back. Not to mention its a federal requirement. Deal with both the upper management demands/expectations, and the bi-----g and unrealistic demands of the agreement professionals. Think abount this managers who leave UP are in demand. Amazon literally poaches them constantly. What options does a 25 year engineer have with no education, no other experience, and a sh-t attitude that complains about everything. Bag a dui and become a manager!
@1yae Managers usually walk very quickly to make it look like they’re busy, they are typically full of BS because they don’t know what they’re doing, and they spend many hours each day attending unproductive meetings. That’s what managers at UP do. Take a look at the Dilbert cartoons with the pointy haired boss. That’s a very accurate description.
Few as possible??? He’ll there’s more managers than workers
Nothing wrong with wanting to better yourself and move into management at a company, but UP isn’t the one to do it at. They don’t develop their managers into leaders. They just operate with as few as possible until those burnout and quit and then they hire more. Rinse and repeat.
Most managers aren't really productive, but UP by the way it operates forces them to spend 12-20 hours a day doing what little they do. If all employees had to obey hours of service laws and after 6 consecutive days on got 3 days off paid, productivity and morale would sky rocket. Running everyone ragged long term brings about diminishing returns very quickly. Also working managers long hours everyday nonstop absolutely breeds the cruel, lying, sadistic bastards that will put up with the hours just for the opportunity to dominate and mistreat others.
Ok so what exactly do managers do again? Do they switch cars? Do they lace up cars? Do they make interchanges? Do they move engines? Do they watch shoves? Do they realign switches? I'm interested in knowing exactly what managers actually do.

You are so stupid.
Because of the way the UP Pension formula works, your UP Pension will be reduced (or eliminated) based on the length of time you remain in a position not participating in the UP Pension.
No, that is not true. Once the pension is vested it does not decrease by going back to the ranks. This is another myth that has went around forever.
By the time you retire your pension will be pennies.
I have been both a union employee and manager. I stayed a manager long enough to get the manager pension and went back to being an engineer. The people that say managers do nothing don’t know what they are talking about. I worked many more hours, longer hours, and endured much more cr-p from management than I ever did as a trainman. I don’t regret my time in management as I learned a lot about the company that I never would have as a union employee. I am happy with my decision to return to the ranks though. Being a manager is definitely not worth the stress and cr-p you have to put up with from both management and union.
