Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

For those who have gone out on STD due to stress and it impacting your health, how long did you stay on leave, did it make a difference when you went back, and what did you do while gone that you found that helped? I am giving great consideration to going out on STD due to the stress and it negatively impacting my physical and mental health. Would like to hear from those who have already taken leave for the same reasons and the difference it made when returning to work.

Please keep the negative to yourself. No one has time nor the energy for that sht. Just managing to through a day at that shtshow is enough. Take it somewhere else if that's all you got.

I was on STD for 8 weeks due to an emergency surgery. The standard allowance for this specific surgery was 6 weeks (yes, guidelines like this exist). My doctor requested an extension due to a complication of the surgery and Sedgwick pulled all my medical records and wanted follow up notes from my doctor every three days - all for a 2 week extension request. It was an incredible hassle and definitely impeded my healing. God forbid they pay out extra days.

Meanwhile, urgent work tasks were half-assed by my coworkers (not their fault, my job is specialized) and everything else waited for my return. Took me 3-4 months to catch up and I was dinged on my performance review because I was late on two items that were due to be completed while I was out.

So just a warning that STD, if it’s even approved, may give you the break you need, but it will still be he-l and maybe worse when you get back.

Let’s just pause a moment and think about how wrong it is that so many people who work at ALllstate are currently under such extreme stress. And what does management do to he-l? More assessments and RIFS while people are literally drowning from overwork.

Take a week off and spend it applying/interviewing for new jobs, you'd be pleasantly surprised unless you're being super picky about the roles you're applying for

I literally had a breakdown, was hospitalized and went out on STD. It was for 6 weeks and then my doctor extended it for another 3 weeks. Management of that office thought I was dogging it. Which tells you the type of management that was there. My wife told the manager of the office that I could no longer return to the office due to health concerns and management accommodated me and placed me in another office. The office I had worked in was high stress and they had recently changed my work assignments to the point the work load was overwhelming. The change of office saved me and I worked for a handful of relatively happy years and luckily smelled the trending downfall of this company and got out before I was affected again.

I went out on STD for mental health. I went to my general doctor and explained how I was having panic attacks daily, how I couldn't get through the day, and how my activities outside of work were suffering (sleep habits, depression, didn't want to see friends or leave my home). My dr agreed and signed all the paperwork and I took about 6 weeks off. I came back for a few weeks then I found another job outside the company and turned in my notice.

For STD, you have to have a "plan", you won't get approved unless you can show you are working to go back to the job eventually. So usually that's going on anti-depressants and going to therapy, sometimes it's a program or retreat. But you have to be willing to show how at the end of STD you will be able to return to work as a result of these changes. Make sure you fill out the paperwork and really emphasize how you cannot function as a result of your mental health, you want to make it clear that you are in no way able to continue with the daily demands of the job.

I hope that helps, I'm sorry you're going through the stress and pressure and anxiety -- it really does take a toll on a person and sometimes you have to take that time off work.

Yeah, you can't just go on STD because your job is stressing you out... Anyone saying otherwise don't know what they're talking about

STD won’t be approved with your doctor saying you need time off work to rest and recover. Instead, you’d need to be hospitalized as an inpatient or participating in a partial hospitalization day program or some other sort of intensive therapy that is required during work hours.

I would advise against it. Best use of your time is going to a counselor and working out the issues... Going on STD and then coming back will just kick the can down the road.

If your counselor recommends STD, great, but may be less disruptive ways to get things figured out
