Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

What is going on with attrition??

Every time I go on LinkedIn I see another EM employee leaving, this week I counted 6. Lost count for this whole month/year. Not just from the US but GBCs and support regions as well.

I’ve only been here for 5 years but has attrition ever been this bad? I’m surprised by the people with 10-20 yoe leaving, I thought they were life long EM at that point and that their skills aren’t transferable (talking emit here).

Are people really getting big enough offers to make it worth leaving? Or are they just giving the middle finger to EM for treating people the way they did…

Don't know, but I left after declining PIP, and I was happy to leave the money sitting as I'm vested in both pension and 401k, but ExxonMobil seems to feel differently. They're sending me revised 'one-time' offers that expire every couple of months. When the next one comes in, I might try to counter offer...

People are leaving due to their personal value system. ExxonMobil has the greatest employee base from a historical perspective. Now these greatest, most hard working, and most empathetic employees are seeing some type of light at the end of the tunnel. After being shackled and constrained by covid, and most everyone experiencing personal life altering family, medical, and financial quantum shifting life experiences during last 15 months, many employees, after extensive personal self and family reflection have arrived at the decision that it is now appropriate and the best time to leave. Some are leaving to save maybe one person from a faked MLRP from the next layoff this year, some are leaving because they have better opportunities for more money, flexibility, or matching 401k, and some are leaving because they are physically and or psychologically burned out for a variety of personal or work related reasons. It is ok , life is full of opportunities and choices and best never to be or claim to be a victim. Acknowledge and own your own reality and decisions.

I am in EMIT and stopped working for XOM long ago. I do whatever I think is interesting and improves MY skills. The management team in EMIT are proudly non technical (like people who only use Apple at home) and have no idea what I do all day anyways........my last deliverable was a helicopter when all they really needed was a ladder.

In situations like these, the first to leave are the strongest and the weakest. Some of the strongest realize they don't have to put up with BS, so they leave. Then the weakest, and this means politically, leave.

Conclusion, I have learnt (and listen closely kids). Flexibility is worth a lot, Don’t always look for more money/excitement.

Yeah, Amazon’s culture may be bad, but atleast they can leave and go elsewhere. If you are in deepwater wells right now, you are absolutely stuck. The people I know who were let go are still looking for jobs. It’s an absolutely miserable situation, I would gladly take less money to have some flexibility in my situation.

I would gladly take 20% less to work at Amazon.

But I am in deepwater and can’t go anywhere but the majors. Didn’t realize what a corner I had painted myself into, one NSI and I am done for.

Lots of people leaving voluntarily even for 10-30% LOWER salaries. That should tell you how bad morale is at XOM.

@1xok -- Nobody is going to Amazon for the amazing work culture. They're going to Amazon because it's a well-managed company that is growing. They will have great career prospects after spending a year or two at AMZN. Can't say the same about those stuck here.

What’s ironic is that so many people are going to Amazon. I’m sure the grass is greener in many pastures and employees are appreciated elsewhere more than they are at XOM, but Amazon is not one of those places…

Some are forced to leave, some are moving to greener pastures. These are not mutually exclusive groups, because so many highly capable folks were placed under NSI.

Long and short of it all is yes, a tonne of people are leaving. And contrary to what is being communicated from management, EM is losing a lot of good talents.

EMIT skills not transferable? Well that's because you got suckered into the Exxon BS. I got laid off this year and got paid a lot to leave. My IT skills are ones that every single sector and organization has to have. No problem getting another job plus making more money. I was smart enough to know never succumb to the Exxon ways, it will hurt you in the long run.

They are the weak ones and have decided to throw in the towel because deep inside them, they know they will be in the NSI category down the road.

Everything is okay and why are you on LinkedIn? You should be polishing up your PowerPoint deck! Alignment of the fonts is the key to success in EM!

@jda+1b1mXSYE - Coming from someone in EMIT, IT here is kind of eh. Mostly legacy apps, half-assed Agile/Devops, coordination type activities, lots of red tape/security and controls...not exactly stuff that's transferrable.

15 year US IT employee here, no, it’s never been this bad despite the lines management may be feeding you. At least where I work the management fully acknowledges there’s a big problem but are struggling with communicating the actual impact to the corporation.

@uip+1b1mXSYE - The people I’m seeing leave aren’t really the “fat”, they are the captains and rowers of the ship that hold a shitton of knowledge when it’s sinking.

The fat are the NREs that play on their phones all day collecting big paychecks.
