Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Why do employees continue to whine about how bad AT&T is?

Sure, this place is a Shiite-Show, but why do y’all care? Take the money, use the benefits, and prepare for when they can you, or when the place goes belly-up. Isn’t it time to accept the realities of working here?

Some of us vent because we knew AT&T when it was a great place to work. We knew it when management supported the employees, who were proud of the projects and work done. We knew we were making a difference for our customers, whether we were developers, customer service people, operations, line workers, whatever. It was AT&T. Now it is SBC, which bought the AT&T name. It is a different company and a different way of functioning. Some of us care, because we still have those same values, and try to hold onto them for as long as we can. It is a tragedy to see the deterioration in all areas of the company, while there is little to nothing we can do about it. Speaking out is the last option we have.

god I hope anybody thinking of working here runs for the hills. so many other places where they treat you like a human and actually think giving customers what they want creates more money.

Those that are craft and retirement eligible are untouchable! There doesn’t seem to be the push to retire the older craft personnel like they do management. That’s so unfair! No news on any layoffs in the near or even distant future!

As a former employee or over 23 years...if you are close to retirement age...they will do everything they can to get rid of you! I fought for my job for 5 to 6 years...they hire managers who show up 6 hours into thier shift...with no breaks for the 2 reps working. No food for a diabetic puts you into an investigation because you closed the store to take a lunch break. Not the first but the second time in 5 years you become the bad guy for your known medical condition! They were told the next time an attorney will be present on the investigation....ATT will do anything to remove senior reps to save that money. They move those with no souls into positions of power to remove those at the high end of the pay scale! Not a company worth having a heart attack or stroke over because they claim you make good money! You can make good money...but keep this in mind...sales 20 years ago could bring you into the 80k range or higher...today with all the extra BS sales tactics may bring you to 60k or so. But you still gonna be bashed daily by management

Last I heard it's still a free country. Employees have every right to vent their disdain regarding the recent events at T. What about all the former employees at WM? Stankey ruined WM and for no good reason. Who really cares if you think everything is hunky dorry, keep on dreaming.

OP I agree. They whine but stay. Obviously benefits outlay the cons. Not saying exec mgmt is great. Plenty to criticize there too. But something makes it worth staying for now.

People always gonna whine, a lot of the whining is because lots of people have this UNREALISTIC yet idealistic visions of what a good "corporate job" should be and what a good employee should be, sadly those are notions of a bygone era (when you could work 40 years with the same company and that loyalty would be well paid when you retire with a pension), that's a far cry from today's corporate landscape.

People want to hold onto these beliefs and feel "betrayed" when that's not how it works.. problem is the world and work changes over time, this is not your parents working world, its yours! As the OP mentioned consider this just a job, you come in , do your stuff, collect pay+benefits and go home, don't complicate the situation with anything greater than that.

OP gets it.
And his/her life is better because of it.

Because whining about someone else and pointing finger at someone else is better than looking at themselves.

For the same reason every manager at AT&T whines about someone else’s performance! You get what you give!

You're not wrong. I am hoping to hang on five more years. I am at an age where finding a comparable position would be tough so I put up with the crud and bide my time. I am grateful that my current gig is pretty good and my manager and her manager don't micro mange.

If you need to ask, you must have your head buried in the sand. AT&T has been trashed for no good reason.

People are not whining - These leaders (S&S) ruined this company and thousands of employees livelihoods. They became wealthy - while destroying wealth of the company. Their penalty? Guaranteed retirement for life. Huge salaries. All fine when earned through growth and value creation.

People are lamenting at the destruction of their lives, their friends lives, and the company they once knew. People are upset, angry, etc., etc.

The employees know.
The customers know.
Now maybe some of the investors know.

But any future employees, customers and investors need to be reminded until the Board of Misdirectors are replaced.
